Pledge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word pledge is used as a synonym for oath, a formal and binding engagement, as in Pledge of Allegiance.
This is called the pledge period and sometimes involved hazing, although new guidelines to reduce hazing have significantly reduced hazing to pledges and some national fraternities have abolished the pledge process altogether to prevent hazing and forbid brothers of these fraternities to refer to new brothers as pledges.
In the case of a pledge, a special property passes to the pledgee, sufficient to enable him to maintain an action against a wrongdoer, but the general property, that is the property subject to the pledge, remains in the pledgor.

 CNN.com - Lawmakers blast Pledge ruling - June 27, 2002
A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is an unconstitutional "endorsement of religion" because of the addition of the phrase "under God" in 1954 by Congress.
In this case, the appeals court said, the lower court's decision to throw out the case found that "the ceremonial reference to God in the pledge does not convey endorsement of particular religious beliefs" -- a precedent the appeals court said is not supported by the recent Supreme Court decisions.
Rather, the phrase 'one nation under God' in the context of the Pledge is normative," the court said in its decision.

Pledge of Allegiance ruled unconstitutional / Many say ruling by S.F. court hasn't a prayer after appeals
The Pledge of Allegiance, a patriotic ritual of America's classrooms, is unconstitutional because the phrase "under God" is a government endorsement of religion, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.
The current pledge "is a profession of a religious belief, namely, a belief in monotheism," said the majority opinion by Judge Alfred Goodwin, a 1971 appointee of President Richard Nixon.
The pledge, composed in 1892 by a Baptist minister and self-described Christian socialist named Francis Bellamy, is a voluntary exercise among school districts.

The Pledge is recited, on average, tens of millions of times a day -- largely by students in schools across America.
Partly in reaction to these factors, a reported 15 resolutions were initiated in Congress to change the pledge.
The change was partly motivated by a desire to differentiate between communism, which promotes Atheism, and Western capitalistic democracies, which were at least nominally Christian.

Ruling the recitation of the pledge unconstitutional sets up another showdown at a time when the makeup of the Supreme Court is in flux.
Because the Supreme Court had rejected Newdow's challenge on procedural grounds and not on its merits, Karlton wrote, he was required to reinstate an earlier federal appeals court ruling in the case that had struck down the recitation of the pledge.
