  The Portland Seven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Portland Seven was a group of American Muslims from the Portland, Oregon area arrested in October 2002 as part of an FBI operation attempting to close down a terrorist cell.
The seven were attempting to join Al Qaeda forces in their fight against the United States military and coalition forces in Afghanistan, or aiding in that attempt.
Originally referred to as "The Portland Six", Patrice Lumumba Ford, Jeffrey Leon Battle, October Martinique Lewis (Battle's ex-wife), Muhammad Ibrahim Bilal, Ahmed Ibrahim Bilal, and Habis Abdulla al Saoub made up the original six members arrested in October 2002.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The FBI apologized to Portland attorney Brandon Mayfield on May 24 after he was released from two weeks in the Multnomah County Detention Center.
None of the Portland Seven was ever in Afghanistan, and the FBI has provided no evidence that they ever contacted al Qaida or the Taliban.
The Portland cases bring to mind the attempted frame-up of Capt. James Yee, the Muslim chaplain from the Pentagon’s Guantanamo Bay Detention Center.

From Gorder’s point of view, what was significant in the Portland Seven case was the USA Patriot Act’s "lowering of the wall" that previously kept foreign intelligence and domestic law enforcement officers from sharing information.
According to Portland attorney Thomas Nelson, Mayfield and his family had noticed an inexplicable footprint on their home’s freshly vacuumed carpet, as well as changes to the position of window blinds and deadbolts, in the weeks prior to Mayfield’s arrest.
Portland attorney Kristen Winemiller, who represented Battle in the Portland Seven case, says that the fact Mayfield is a lawyer makes the use of secret searches in his case especially troublesome.

The Patriot Act was crucial in Portland in allowing the use of wiretaps to prevent a potential attack within the United States while giving authorities the opportunity to round up as many co-conspirators as possible.

Ford, who was convicted of attempting to join the Taliban in late fall 2001, was subpoenaed in July by a grand jury in Portland.
Ford’s father, Kent Ford, 61, of Portland, said he didn’t mind that the two months wouldn’t be taken off the sentence.

Sometimes called the seventh member of the Portland Six (thus making it the "Portland Seven"), Battle's former wife October Martinique Lewis, age 25 in 2002, conspired to help the group by sending money to them under false names in other countries to finance what she knew to be their illegal activities.
