dOc DVD Review: The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
Yet of all the fatalistic femmes, Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice is perhaps the quintessential specimen.
Both Turner and Garfield are pitch-perfect in their parts, creating a steamy chemistry that carries the film and adds dimension to the hard-boiled story.
Always an underrated actress whose beauty overshadowed her talent, Turner files perhaps her finest performance, deftly complicating the femme fatale stereotype by layering Cora with just enough sincerity and softness to gain audience affection, and keep her true colors a mystery.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) is one of the best film noirs of all time - and one of the earliest prototypes of today's 'erotic thrillers.' The screenplay (by Harry Ruskin and Niven Busch) was based on the controversial first novel/pot-boiler (1934) of the same name by notorious writer James M. Cain.
This dark melodrama was the third screen adaptation of James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice - the previous two were Pierre Chenal's Le Dernier Tournant (1939) (French) and Luchino Visconti's first feature - the unauthorized Ossessione (1942) (Italian) with the setting transferred to Fascist Italy.
Maybe the next one is the one I've always been lookin' for.

Although Postman is undoubtedly a precise work of film noir, it's reputation may be based as much on it's mold-shattering relationship with MGM as on its artistic merit.
Released by MGM, Postman was so far out of character for the studio that MGM had to borrow John Garfield to cast the leading role.
Released in 1946 by MGM and featuring contemporary stars John Garfield and Lana Turner, "The Postman Always Rings Twice" is an often absorbing and exciting movie that for all its successes never manages to exhibit the dark and shadowy menace that makes for great noir.

So I have now seen the Postman Always Rings Twice directed by Bob Rafelson and starring Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange twice now, and see it on its own terms without much to really compare it to.
Perhaps my perceptions could change once I see the older Hollywood film (even though Luchino Visconti's own version of the book, Ossessione, is one of his masterpieces), but for the moment this is a fairly competent, sometimes exciting, and usually sensual story of lust, murder, thick plots and a few tight twists and turns.
The sex scenes years later are still enticing, and the ending is a true whopper that is part of the story's best catharsis, though in its own formula still tragic.

Tay Garnett’s 1946 version of The Postman Always Rings Twice is a classic little noir film version of the James M. Cain novel that smoulders where the ugly and much more explicit 1981 remake starring Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange overstates.
There are some irritating parallel tramline scratches running down the left-hand side of the print for about the first twenty minutes of the film, which is not always clearly visible, but can be very distracting once it is noticed.
The 1946 version of The Postman Always Rings Twice is quintessential film noir, with a dark, storyline involving themes of fatal attraction, murder, flmail and betrayal, played with smouldering sensuality by the two leads.

In setting The Postman Always Rings Twice, I was motivated by two main features of the story--the dramatic, driving tension which runs throughout, and the underlying tenderness which evolves as the two main characters develop.

Lana Turner and John Garfield hunger for something more in Tay Garnett's glossy soap opera noir, "The Postman Always Rings Twice." Based on James M. Cain's lusty potboiler, Turner is fantastic as the manipulative yet vulnerable Cora Smith and Garfield excellent as the drifter who can't get Cora or her dreams out of his blood.
