Lana Turner and John Garfield hunger for something more in Tay Garnett's glossy soap opera noir, "The Postman Always Rings Twice." Based on James M. Cain's lusty potboiler, Turner is fantastic as the manipulative yet vulnerable Cora Smith and Garfield excellent as the drifter who can't get Cora or her dreams out of his blood.
Garnett's visual approach is subdued compared to the more expressionistic film noir of the period, but he's at no loss when he films the luminous Turner in her milky-white wardrobe.
Director Tay Garnett had her in stunning, shapely white dresses, pants and uni's that showed off her figure, complemented by a platinum hairdo that in glorious black and white was so intense it was almost colorful.

An amateur boxer who gave up a legal career for acting, Cronyn played a wide variety of characters in films such as "Phantom of the Opera" (1943); "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946); "People Will Talk" (1951); "Cleopatra" (1963); "There Was a Crooked Man" (1970); and "The World According to Garp" (1982).
Cronyn frequently worked with his late wife Jessica Tandy on stage, television ("Foxfire"), and in movies, most notably as a married couple in "Cocoon" (1985) and "Cocoon: The Return" (1988).
Cronyn is survived by his wife, children's writer Susan Cooper whom he married in 1996, a son, two daughters, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Cronyn, known to modern audiences for his roles in the 1980s "Cocoon" movies, was a seasoned stage actor, making his theater debut in 1931 as a paperboy in "Up Pops the Devil."
