Risk and Insurance : 2006 POWER BROKER | INTRODUCTION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
Good brokers have four ingredients, at the very least: knowledge of a particular industry; creativity in identifying and mitigating problems facing risk managers; providing prompt and efficient service; and a clear sense of the bounds of ethical behavior and what is right and wrong.
The broker scandals, in which the top four brokerage houses were all forced to settle with regulators to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, have caused the buyers to reconsider their traditional take-for-granted relationship with those who are supposed to look out for buyers' interests.
During the judging interview, risk managers were asked to base their opinions on three factors: the broker's knowledge in the client's particular industry, the broker's creativity in finding solutions to difficult risk-related problems and the broker's record on client service.

 Why Use Power Marketers?
Now that you’ve been introduced to the power marketer, and have an idea of why you will almost certainly be buying your electricity supplies from a marketer rather than a power producer, the question arises as to how one selects a power marketer.
Where once it was simple rate negotiations with the local utility, with perhaps the fillip of an independent power plant, today procurement is done using an experienced broker who will increasingly assist the customer in selecting among power marketers as their suppliers of choice.
For the broker, the key job becomes making sure that the marketer’s problems remain just that-- their problem, and to insulate the customer from the complexities of the marketplace.

 The Power Broker
But The Power Broker is first and foremost a brilliant multidimensional portrait of a man-an extraordinary man who, denied power within the normal framework of the democratic process, stepped outside that framework to grasp power sufficient to shape a great city and to hold sway over the very texture of millions of lives.
He himself wrote the legislation that cemented his power; he battled and defeated FDR (his most bitter enemy), controlled the entire huge flow of federal funds into legal fees, insurance commissions, lucrative contracts on the basis of who could best pay him back in the only coin he coveted: power.
This is a study of the corruption which power exerts on those who wield it, to set beside Tacitus and his emperors, Shakespeare and his kings.

The Power Broker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York is a Pulitzer Prize-winning 1974 biography of Robert Moses, "New York City's Master Builder", by Robert Caro.
The Power Broker caused quite a stir when it was published, after the "One Mile" chapter, about the difficulties in constructing one section of the Cross-Bronx Expressway and the way Moses ran roughshod over the interests of the East Tremont section the road effectively destroyed, ran as an excerpt in The New Yorker.
Moses' influence on New York City was undisputed, even though his political power had been cut off, and as it was shortly after President Nixon's unprecedented resignation, the public was receptive to accounts of public officials absolutely corrupted by the power they had attained.

 POWER
Without question, the world's oldest profession is not prostitution, but "power broker", because power is intangible; it can only be touched by belief.
We still credit rocks (magnets) with the power to attract or repel, yet we've all seen a loving mother - who knows all about allergies - shoveling food into her baby's mouth cooing, "mmm, good!", and the baby crying and repeatedly spitting out the food because it isn't good to the baby.
Personal power is easily enhanced or decimated by knowing whether flowers bring delight or discomfort to the recipient, yet there are people who don't have a clue if their own mother really prefers roses, carnations, daisies or dandelions!

Iraq's unlikely power broker - Council on Foreign Relations
Yesterday’s vote on Iraq’s draft constitution was, after all, supposed to be the formalization of just such a compact—an agreement in principle about sharing power and resources among the country’s Shi’a, Sunnis, Kurds and other factions.
Moussa may also seek to bridge the gap between the Shi’a majority currently holding the balance of power and those Sunnis who, to date, have refused to have anything to do with them.
As Katzman notes, there is some fear among the newly empowered Shi’a that the negotiations over the constitution may, in the end, turn out to be a debate about which form of government will be toppled by the insurgents when the Americans leave.
