Presbyterian refers to a branch of Protestant denominations derived from the Reformed churches of the Reformantion, which share a common form of church government (presbyterian) and which historically subscribed to the teachings of John Calvin.
Presbyterians place great importance upon education and continuous study of the scriptures, theological writings, and understanding and interpretation of church doctrine embodied in several statements of faith and catechisms formally adopted by various branches of the church.
In Canada, the largest Presbyterian Church is the Presbyterian Church in Canada, about seventy percent of which merged in 1925 with the Methodist Church, Canada, and the Congregational Union of Canada to form the United Church of Canada.

The Presbyterian College/Le Collège Presbytèrien, 3495 University Avenue, Montreal, Quebec, is a Theological College of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, and is affiliated with McGill University through their Faculty of Religious Studies.
Classes began in the autumn of 1867 in the basement of Erskine Presbyterian Church in downtown Monreal, with Professor (later Principal) Donald Harvey MacVicar.
In October 2005, a joint statement from the Principals of Presbyterian College and Knox College was released, announcing that formal discussions towards amalgamating both institutions had been unanimoussly adopted by their respective Boards of Governors on October 6, 2005.

MacVicar, D.H., D.D., LL.D., Principal of the Presbyterian College, Montreal and Professor of Dogmatics, Church Government and Homiletics, was born in Dunglass, near Campbelltown, Cantyre, Scotland, on November 29th, 1831.
In 1881 he was chosen moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the duties of which office he discharged with acknowledged firmness, courtesy and judgement.
In the Philadelphia meeting he read a paper on "The Catholicity of Presbyterianism"; and at Belfast he was chairman of the Committee on the admission of churches into the alliance.

 Rev. Dr. Donald Neil MacMillan
Graduating in 1933, Donald won the "Scotch Presbyterian" scholarship and two gold medals — the prestigious Calvin and the Drysdale in church history — and was one of two graduates who completed honours studies to receive the BD degree.
MacMillan was appointed by the General Assembly of 1954 to be convener of the board of education and of the committee on reception of ministers and licentiates, positions of responsibility he fulfilled for the next five years.
A major change occurred in 1959 when General Assembly appointed him to the chair of systematic theology at The Presbyterian College, now open by the resignation of his old teacher and mentor Frank Scott MacKenzie (he had previously substituted when Dr. MacKenzie was on leave as Moderator in 1950-51).

 Morrice Hall (formerly Presbyterian College)
The Presbyterian College of Montreal was founded in the year 1864 with the intent of establishing an educational and training facility for ministers, yet the college did not have a permanent home until 1871.
The Gothic theme, a reminder of the College's function, was emphasized in the details and ornament, the shape of the windows, and the steep, slate roof.
In 1961, the Presbyterian College moved to the southeast corner of Milton and University Streets at which point the old Presbyterian College was given to McGill by John W. McConnell, always a charitable friend of McGill, and renamed Morrice Hall after the building's original benefactor.

While pastor of Cooke's Church, he was appointed lecturer in apologetics (1864) in Knox College, and taught the theological classes in the Montreal Presbyterian College during the first half of the first session of that institution (1867).

Naismith was a graduate of McGill University in 1887, where he studied philosophy and The Presbyterian College, Montreal in 1890.
In 1898, he received a medical degree from Gross Medical College in Denver (which merged in 1911 with the University of Colorado in Boulder), and the Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa, from Presbyterian College in 1938.
In 1891, while working as a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, he was asked to look for a way to relieve his students' boredom during indoor winter gym classes.
