Pretenders II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pretenders II is the second album by the rock band The Pretenders.
Their second album, Pretenders II, was released a scant two months later, to mixed critical reception, partly because two of the better songs on the album had been previously released, and partly because many of the songs were viewed as overly-similar (though not quite as groundbreaking) to the band's debut.
The album would be the final release from the original lineup of the band, as shortly afterword the band would be fractured by the drug abuse that would take the life of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, leading to a long recording hiatus.

Charlie Parker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unfortunately, the concert clashed with a televised heavyweight boxing match between Rocky Marciano and Jersey Joe Walcott and as a result was poorly attended.
Thankfully, for the sake of posterity, Mingus recorded the concert, and the album Jazz at Massey Hall is often cited as one of the finest recordings of a live jazz performance.
One of Parker's longstanding desires was to perform with a string section; he was a keen fan of classical music.

So at last this is The Pretenders' debut album, one of the first releases in the '80s from last decade's new rock rulers; so eagerly anticipated, yet ironically not one which will make or break reputations.
This is a superb first album (it's been to the number one spot on the British charts) and shows singer-guitarist Hynde as a singer with original and creative ideas.
The Pretenders' lineup may have changed plenty of late (Hynde is the only remaining original member), but when they made their first album, they were a genuine band, made up of three British rockers and a former journalist from Ohio who lived in London.

Bio: Over the years, the Pretenders became a vehicle for guitarist/vocalist Chrissie Hynde's songwriting, yet it was a full-fledged band when it was formed in the late '70s.
Their self-titled debut album was released in early 1980 and eventually climbed to number one in the U.K. The Pretenders were nearly as successful in America, with the album reaching the Top Ten and "Brass in Pocket" reaching number 14.
The album did return the Pretenders to the Top 40 with the ballad "I'll Stand by You." In the fall of 1995, the Pretenders released the live album Isle of View, then remained silent for a few years.

It was their chart-topping debut album that eventually put them on the road to becoming one of the decade's most important bands.
The album was erratic, but it did contain some gems, notably the epic 'Thin Line Between Love And Hate', the powerful 'Middle Of The Road' and the melodic, yet poignant tribute to Honeyman-Scott, 'Back On The Chain Gang' (the band's first US Top 10 single).
Back with the Pretenders she appeared at Live Aid at the JFK stadium in Philadelphia, and would enjoy success in August 1985 under her own name duetting with UB40 on the UK chart-topping reggae remake of Sonny And Cher's 'I Got You Babe'.

The band's hugely successful self-titled debut album was released in 1980, but the drug related deaths of Honeyman-Scott in 1982 and Farndon in 1983 nearly brought the Pretenders career to an end.

This nearly perfect debut album showcases both the extraordinary songs of Ohio-born singer Chrissie Hynde and the rhythmically complex performances of her U.K.-bred band, Pretenders.
It was a wide open moment in music history and The Pretenders were part of a turning of the tide against some of the things that came back to kill the music industry in the 90's.
The band's subsequent name change followed this album's release, was not even noted by most, and I don't know why people seem to consider a "The" placed before the name of the band as anything important.

Hynde kept the Pretenders brand vital throughout the rest of the '80s and the '90s, putting out bracing, nervy rock albums every few years with a rotating supporting cast that typically included drummer Chambers, while also becoming well known for her commitment to a variety of social causes, including PETA.
As with any Pretenders album, Loose Screw is dominated by Hynde's throaty, playful contralto and the group's tight, lean rock structures.
The Pretenders' experiments with light reggae rhythms, which cropped up periodically in their late '80s work, are very much in evidence throughout this album, giving the material a pleasantly swaying island flavor that softens their typically driving hard rock.

Chrissie Hynde & The Pretenders - Classic Rock
Fronted by lead singer Chrissie Hynde since 1978, the Pretenders have proven to be one of the most influential and enduring bands of the era.
Although the Pretenders are usually thought of as an English band, Hynde was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1951.
Hynde formed the Pretenders in 1978, along with James Honeyman-Scott, Pete Farndon and Martin Chambers, and the band released their self-titled debut album in 1980.

This may be the first real "rock" album (as in loud guitars, meaning Aretha doesn't count) by a woman that stands on equal footing with any rock album by a man. Not rock with an "art" tag qualifier (Patti Smith), or a mannered pop that evades emotional directness (Debbie Harry).
This is the only Pretenders album I've heard with songs that aren't in 4/4 time, which is what makes it so good.
Hynde's new back-up band (which is all the Pretenders are by now, excepting founding member Martin Chambers) are bland and undistinct hacks, at least from this impression.

Originally released because of the heavy demand for new Pretenders music while the band was unable to get into the studio (due to their virtually non-stop touring), Extended Play allowed us a savoury taste of what was to come on the second album.
Pretenders II received a vast amount of bad reviews, but that certainly did not stop the fans from buying, and thoroughly enjoying, the record.
Different session musicians play on the album, but Chrissie was in the process of sifting through them to find anyone who was suitable as a permanent member.

 Pretenders Discography at CD Universe
Formed in the late 1970s, the Pretenders' original lineup--fronted by voice-for-the-ages Chrissie Hynde--made melodic, intelligent guitar rock that straddled the gap between punk's rawness and the ear candy of new wave pop, with a touch of '60s influence.
For their first couple of albums, the band seemed untouchable, but the untimely deaths of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon threw the remaining Pretenders for a loop.
Decades later, the Pretenders, and Hynde, remain rock legends.

Former rock critic Chrissie Hynde launched the Pretenders with an engaging, yet passive, version of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." She unveiled her own persona fully on The Pretenders, which contains a series of excellent compositions marked by her sensual vocals and brilliant sense of dynamics.
An understanding of pop's structures allowed Hynde to exploit them to her own ends while sympathetic support, particularly that of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, used the excitement of rock without reference to its cliches.

One may long for the punk panache head Pretender Chrissie Hynde displayed on the band's early records, but frankly, if she has to celebrate the joys of motherhood, we should be thankful that the resultant "Hymn to Her" is such an exquisite a bit of neo-folk rock.
Attention must also be paid to two of Hynde's loveliest ballads: the beguiling "My Baby" and the Memphis soul-tinged "Chill Factor." A very effective cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Room Full of Mirrors" closes the album.
