The Pretty Toney Album - Ghostface Killah - Song Listings
Ghostface Killah fields questions from reporters on the intro to The Pretty Toney Album, the rapper's first under the just-Ghostface moniker and his first on Def Jam.
According to the intro, the Wu-Tang are doing fine and waiting for the right moment to drop their next album, and it's none of your business why Pretty Toney took so long to come out.
Pretty Toney comes close, very close, and puts the man's solo career back on solid ground.

Ghostface Killah: The Pretty Toney Album (2004): Reviews
Forget notions of old or new schools: this is an album that blends a kindergarten-level technique with styles that are strictly postgraduate.
Unfortunately, The Pretty Toney Album falls short in replacing what Raekwon had contributed to Ghost's previous album releases, causing the album to feel essentially incomplete.
Overall, this album could have been as great as Supreme Clientele had it not been for all the tracks that got cut after the first disc print (mostly due to sample clearance issues).

This album shows a progressive development of the soulful styling introduced on the Ironman album, one of the best and last good albums to come from the Wu.
I do think the album could have had more appearances from the other members of the Wu, but when hearing an album from a member of the group you expect and hope to hear collaborations from them on the tracks.
Some of the highlights on the album for me were "Biscuits," which reminds me of a track from the Ironman album.

Except for the shameless Missy Elliott collaboration "Push," and "Ghostface," which suffers from a pseudo-sexy femme chorus and A.D.D., Pretty Toney is swaddled in soul.
Pretty Toney has the weight of sincere soul music: Ghostface's heart is heavy.
At the beginning of the album, he warns, "Stay in school"; at the end, he implores, "Each one teach one." Onstage, grasping his gold, he said, "This shit don't make me, I make it.

 Ghostface Killah - Pretty Tony
A three year break with no albums, with two 4 1/2 mic albums, "Supreme Clientele" and "Bullet Proof Wallets" the most talented in the struggling Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah delivers another bullet to the hip hop industry, still showing that he can rock the mic.
One of the plusses I felt looking at the track-list of this CD was their was no other Wu-Tang artists on it, I thought Ghost wasn't getting enough respect in the game and people weren't recognizing his talents because of being overshadowed by Meth and RZA.
This album is short from a classic, another 4 1/2 mic album in the source.

Throgh the first half the album is golden with cuts like "Beat the Clock" and the 2/3 of the Lox assisted "Metal Lungies".
It's the other half of the album that brings it down with tracks like "Tush","Ghostface", and "Tooken Back" but don't get me wrong "Tooken Back" is not a bad track but is just not up to par with the others.
Don't get me wrong, the album has its shining moments in the sun, but it is not up for consideration to be compare to his previous efforts.

But that, combined with all the other little tricks and treats that sprawl their way across this LP, make The Pretty Toney Album all that and a bag of chips.

And what I'm diggin is "The Pretty Toney Album" by Toney Starks aka Ghostface Killah of the Wu Tang Clan.
The album is 18 cuts deep, 5 of which are skits.
That is evidenced by each and every track he spits on, not to mention that all of the beats have that sweet rugged-old-time-feel to 'em as well.

The Wu-Tang Clan's luster has dimmed since the group exploded onto the hip-hop scene with a radical new style, sound, and ethos in the early '90s.
He only produces two tracks here, however; Pretty Toney's gorgeous production from largely unheralded beatsmiths proves that it doesn't take Kanye West and Just Blaze to make an album as drenched in soul as The Blueprint.
Delving deep into Motown, Stax, and Philly soul, Pretty Toney recaptures the hunger, emotion, hood gothicism, and gritty storytelling of Wu-Tang Clan's infancy.

Of course when you listen to "The Pretty Toney Album," the first thing that'll strike you is what you don't listen to Ghostface for.
On the other hand, every other aspect of the album is a startling reminder of why rap heads praise Ghostface and also why he's the only Wu member still breathing fire.

Theodore Unit: 718: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
That The Pretty Toney Album has criminally underperformed seems to defeat the commercial mandate for an outtakes collection, but the bevy of surplus material is surprisingly consistent; Ghostface's first entry under the Theodore Unit moniker serves as a nice, if unnecessary, accessory to its criminally unsuccessful counterpart.
A track like "Guerilla Hood", for instance, which would have sat favorably in the Pretty Toney tracklist, was probably reserved with a side project in mind.
It's hard to imagine why Trife doesn't yet have a solo album to his credit, but his spots on Supreme Clientele, Pretty Toney, and now 718 have given him a fantastic endorsement.

RTE.ie Entertainment - Ghostface - The Pretty Toney Album
'The Pretty Toney Album' is firmly in the latter tradition, with a soul-drenched sound that is a long way from the minor-key symphonies that made us fall in love with the Wu-Tang Clan.
The only downside is the absence of other Clan members; for all Ghostface's skills, a few contributions from Inspectah Deck, GZA or old sparring partner Raekwon would not have hurt.
But still, 'The Pretty Toney Album' is a magnificently twisted love-letter to the days of epic soul and stands head and shoulders above your standard rap release.

This seems to be because, in dropping the “Killah” from his name, Ghostface has changed the ratio between hard-headed thug narratives and squishy love songs, having less of the former and more of the latter.
What really makes the album work are the soul music samples that dominate most of its tracks.
My favorite song on the album is “Tooken Back”, a duet with the raunchy Jacki-O. It’s a battle of the sexes that turns into the hope of reconciliation.

Once known as Ghostface Killah, a moniker that could be construed as racist, a member of the once-fresh Wu Tang Clan, Ghostface has fallen as a leader within hip-hop and has forced fans of the genre to swallow yet another boring thug album.
Horrible "skits" between each track plague the album, leaving one to wonder if Ghostface has what it takes to conjure up a decent rap album anymore.
The selection of obscure old school R and B numbers Ghostface samples on virtually every track is impressive to say the least.

After supremely hot albums Ironman and Supreme Clientele, Ghostface disappointed some with Bulletproof Wallets and he was disappointed with the marketing and promotions of the album so when the opportunity came he signed with the big boys, Def Jam and this is his first album The Pretty Toney Album.
The album starts out with “Biscuits” featuring Trife of the Theodore Unit where Ghost talks about his squad and their ability to get theirs no matter what even if meant using the big biscuits and putting some holes in someone.
The song is hot and Missy does a great job as she is as nasty as Ghost is but the chorus is lacking.

On the intro to his fourth solo record, Ghostface (aka Ghostface Killah, aka Tony Starks) makes pains to pronounce that the Wu-Tang Clan is still intact and working on their next record.
However, THE PRETTY TONEY ALBUM may be the least Wu-Tang-flavored outing by any member of the crew.
PRETTY TONEY does not suffer from this, however, as the record is rife with powerful beats and striking samples.

While the rest of the clan continues to churn out average projects every couple of years, Ghostface has proudly carried the Wu-Tang torch on each release.
Even with the production of RZA, True Master and others, the disc suggests that the Wu brethren are close to passing their prime.
Pretty Toney starts off strong, with the traditional Wu-Tang sound on "Biscuits," "Kunta Fly Sh**" and "Metal Lungies," featuring Sheek Louch and Styles P. But shortly thereafter it starts to slip, with an annoying bathtub skit, the out-of-character "Save Me Dear" and the horrendous first single, "Tush," featuring Missy Elliott.

Quite simply the recordings that made the album are not even close to the quality of some of the ones that failed to make the cut, for legal reasons.
Instead of representing the cream of an artists output, it becomes the repository of their detritus, a legal document filled with legal music in an illegal world.

At the end of the album, the big thing that makes you look past the missteps is the fact that you can listen to the other tracks over and over again.
I've had this album since it came out and I can honestly say, while it's not the best I've bought this past year, it's easily one that I listen to the most.

Ever since his departure from Epic Records for the friendly confines of Def Jam (a move confirmed by his appearance in the popular video game Def Jam Vendetta) hip-hop heads have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the Ghostface Killah saga.
The album strives hard to hit all the right notes from the start, and succeeds in high fashion.
It's ironic that one of the things Ghost says on the track is "love my last album though the joint went wood." Be that as it may, this latest release is at least as good as "Bulletproof Wallets" and in some ways more consistant.

Eleven years and dozens of albums later, from original members and affiliates, Tony Starks is doing the most thorough job of holding the Clan's dimming torch.
With his long awaited, much hyped and outstanding fourth album, The Pretty Toney Album, Ghost Deini (nee Dennis Coles) proves he has the persona, vision and flair to keep the Wu alive, all by his lonesome.
He frequently shouts out his new millennium crew The Theodore Unit, but this album is very much a Wu derivate with more soul than he has Wallabes.

He ends the album with "Love," a heartfelt dedication to Martin, Malcolm, his mom, his babies, and so forth.
It's a stark contrast from the brutish misogyny of "Last Night" or slobbering lust of "Keisha's House." Ghost's line from "Love," "Funny how love could end so subtle/Was it just sex and not really love for the couple?" is so poetically sensitive, you'd think you wandered into an Erykah Badu video.
Pretty Toney isn't Ghost's best album; he's yet to surpass the uniform excellence of his first two, Ironman and Supreme Clientele.
