Despite the single's cover of a boy holding an American Flag, the song is actually critical of the United States, discussing Communism, poverty and nuclear war.
The song in general seems to have a left leaning.
The B-Side of the track was "Girl", a light pop-number which speaks of Prince's lust for a woman.

 ECHO VI/1: Woodworth
Prince has never ceased recording and releasing songs and albums, though many of them have only been available through his website .
The songs on internet-released albums such as The Slaughterhouse (2004) and The Chocolate Invasion (2004) have much in common with the material on Musicology both in terms of thematic focus and stylistic influences, and it is largely the lack of major-label publicity and distribution that prompted many reviewers to ignore them.
Considered in tandem, Prince’s Musicology album and tour are a portrait of an artist who is firmly rooted in the history of African-American popular music, using his subject position not as an end in itself, but as a platform for exploring political and personal issues relevant in today’s America.

 John's Prince Reviews
This is perhaps one of the all-time best opening tracks on a Prince album, and sets the album's tone as a series of songs not limited to single genre.
Long-time Prince fans who are not enticed to repurchase vintage Prince for a mere three new songs also have a second incentive.
Depending on whether or not you listen to the "clean" version of the album, the song is either a lot of swearing or a lot of squealing.

Sealetter Cruise Ship Review: Royal Caribbean's Song of America Bermuda Cruise Sept 1997
Having recently sold the Nordic Prince, Song of Norway and Sun Viking, Royal Caribbean is obviously positioning itself as a mega-ship line, with spacious, comfortable, new ships and the "ship as destination" experience that many cruisers seem to expect.
Song of America is not such a ship, and I was well aware of that before boarding her, having researched the line in several of the fine books that rate and describe ships.

Dave's songs were always intriguing in their subject matter (when you could understand the words!); this one concerns a young man's musings about the return to his hometown and friends and family after an involuntary vacation in jail.
Though neither song was bad, they just seemed to lack that certain something special needed to capture the imagination of the public (or, at least, of radio programmers).
That album was shelved, this song being the only one featured on it to have not been issued previously in a studio version.

The longest recorded, released, studio Prince song is America, clocking in at about 21 minutes on the 12" single release.
Prince was "Prince & The Revolution." Prince was "The Time." It is hard to name a project that Prince was involved in and not equate that project with the man -- but some people don't get that idea and so they want to grant credit where it is simply not due.
The song is like 11 minutes long, but it feels like 4 minutes 2 me! Normally when he tries 2 get creative it drags and gets long-winded.

The reason for the closure have been fueled by the recent actions of Prince (which is the only legal name we can call him by, since it IS still his legal name, and always has been).
I think we can all learn a lesson from Prince's recent actions - separate the music from the man. We all love the music, that will never change, but respect is earned not given.

At the end of the song, while the rest of the guys play out the ending, he goes over to Kim and does this charming little dance with her.
This song is just HUGE in its power and its presence and even though they're still working into it, here's another song that I do not think the studio version does ANY justice to AT ALL.

After the albums 1999 and Purple Rain, Prince was already multi-selling superstar and he could basically do what he wanted, he went one step further again and released a album that is pop-psychedelic with songs simular to Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" but with more pop.
Prince's "Around The World In A Day" is less a nod to psychedelia than it is another of his great 80s pop records, teeming with those explosive drum beats, synths and subtle funk grooves.
"America" is funky as hell (Especially it's riff), the song itself critisise political America and it's fight to destroy communism in the 80's instead of taking care of it's own citizen.
