The Princess Bride - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Princess Bride is a 1973 novel written by William Goldman and originally published in the USA by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.
Later on, Buttercup is kidnapped by 3 criminals: a Spaniard swordsman named Inigo Montoya, seeking revenge after a 6 fingered man killed his father; the timid giant named Fezzik who doesn't think he has a right to think; and the leader of the group, Vizzini, a genius Sicilian.
The most recent, 30th anniversary edition of the book, included hints to the sequel's plot, and a promise to have the full version completed before a 35th anniversary edition (2009).

Review: Princess Bride, The   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Best of all, despite its satirical bent, The Princess Bride can still be enjoyed on the simpler level of the story of a princess being rescued by her one true love.
The Princess Bride is constructed as a story-within-a-story, with the framing scenes occurring in the "real world" as a grandfather (Peter Falk) stops by to read a story to his sick grandson (Fred Savage).
For director Rob Reiner, The Princess Bride represented the fourth of seven consecutive commercial and critical successes (a streak that began with 1984's This Is Spinal Tap and ended with 1992's A Few Good Men).

William Goldman, The Princess Bride   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
To begin with, Goldman's masterpiece is not simply The Princess Bride.
Princess Buttercup lives in Florin, a mythical country (from which the equally mythic S. Morgenstern and Goldman's family supposedly hail) located in some obscure part of Europe next to the equally obscure country of Guilder.
At the beginning of the tale, Buttercup is one of the 20 most beautiful women in the world, and after her true love, Westley, is apparently lost at sea to the Dread Pirate Roberts, she quickly rises up the ranks to become the Most Beautiful in all the world.

ReadingGroupGuides.com - The Princess Bride by William Goldman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Eventually to be adapted for the silver screen, The Princess Bride was originally a beautifully simple, insightfully comic story of what happens when the most beautiful girl in the world marries the handsomest prince in the world--and he turnsout to be a son of a bitch.
William Goldman states that he is adapting The Princess Bride from a novel written by the great Florinese writer, S. Morgenstern.
The Princess Bride can be thought of as two intertwining tales, one focusing on Westley and Buttercup, the other on the life of Goldman himself (or the fictional Goldman, at any rate).

The SF Site Featured Review: The Princess Bride, 25th Anniversary Edition
So, as with the best fairy tales, The Princess Bride works on a number of levels as a satisfying read for, as the saying goes, kids of all ages.
She also shared many of the same reactions attributed to the young Goldman as his own father read to him, in particular a spot when a main character dies (but, this being a fairy tale, it's an obstacle that has a work-around).
Playing the role of the omniscient, know-it-all editor that many writers are plagued by, Goldman gets the urge to insert a reconciliation scene of his creation between Buttercup, the Princess Bride, and Westley, her lost love, to improve Morgenstern's narrative.
