 The Princess Diaries
And, of course, there's the well-worn cliché "the fairy tale princess." While the film is charming, I found it somewhat offensive, but not so much that I would suggest that young girls not see the film.
A bigger surprise to Mia is discovering that her grandmother is Queen Clarisse of Genovia and that she is a princess.
She must decide if she will honor her grandmother's request to move to Genovia and become a princess or stay in San Francisco and fulfill her dreams of being a popular kid in school.

Crosswalk.com - "Princess Diaries 2" Promotes an Americanized, Cheesy Europe
Based on the bestselling books by author Meg Cabot, the first “Princess Diariesfilm was widely successful, so a sequel was not a surprise.
Ultimately, my biggest concern with “Princess Diaries 2” is its message that we must follow our feelings, even if they lead us to lust after someone who has been lying and deceiving us while attempting to take away from us the one thing that matters – in Mia’s case, the throne of Genovia.
Fortunately, director Garry Marshall opted to maintain the G rating of the film by excluding profanities, obscenities, nudity and sexuality (save two references to homosexuality – can’t leave those out).  In one heart-wrenching scene, Mia blesses a group of orphans then gives them her vacation castle in which to live.

The Princess Diaries - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Princess Diaries is a novel by Meg Cabot that was made into a film in 2001.
The Princess Diaries books are not simple makeover stories as the movie is. Mia is portrayed as a very awkward adolescent, even (or especially) after her makeover.
The main story in both revolve around how a teenage girl named Mia Thermopolis discovers she is the princess of a fictional country called Genovia.

Marshall presents a fairy-tale version of teen-age life in "The Princess Diaries." In one scene, he creates a beach party straight out of "Beach Blanket Bingo." Mandy Moore, pop diva to pre-pubescents, sings a 1950s doo-wop tune as the teens frolic on the sand.
The best scenes in "The Princess Diaries" are the ones in which Queen Clarisse instructs Mia on how to be a proper princess.
Then again, "The Princess Diaries" doesn't send that great of a message to kids.

 THE PRINCESS DIARIES
The Princess Diaries stars Anne Hathaway (TV's Get Real) as Mia Thermopolis, a 10th grade nerd who has lived with her artist mother (Caroline Goodall) in an old San Francisco firehouse for all of her 15 years.
Mia attends "princess classes" with her grandmother and a friendly bodyguard (Marshall regular Hector Elizondo) every day after school, submits to the obligatory makeover scene (performed by an uncredited Larry Miller) and— presto change-o — she emerges as the drop-dead gorgeous girl we all knew lived in those clunky combat boots.
Marshall tried to recreate the smelly magic via the re-teaming of Julia and Richard in the equally idiotic Runaway Bride a couple of years back, and now he's made what amounts to a Woman sequel with a gangly teenager replacing the hooker with a heart of gold (it is, after all, a Disney film).

"The Princess Diaries" is a march through the swamp of recycled ugly duckling stories, with occasional pauses in the marsh of sitcom cliches and the bog of Idiot Plots.
As "The Princess Diaries" creeps from one painfully obvious plot destination to another, we wait impatiently for the characters onscreen to arrive at what has long been clear to the audience.
The film takes place in the present day, I guess, if through some kind of weird "Pleasantville" time warp the present day had the values and behavior of the "Andy Hardy" movies.

This is when "The Princess Diaries" starts to falter, because the public life that greets Mia when she finally ascends to the throne, is too much reality for this fantasy film to suppress.
The extent to which The Princess Diaries succeeds is the result of how pretty Hathaway at first mimics, then internalizes, Andrews' essential majesty.
Unless you're a nine-year old girl, the hunting of the future Princess Mia of Genovia by an overeager press, puts a serious damper on "The Princess Diaries", with the death of Princess Diana still relatively fresh in our minds.

 The Princess Diaries
There is nothing exceptional about The Princess Diaries, based on Meg Cabot's novel, a familiar journey into the ugly duckling genre, but it should still appeal to little girls everywhere, especially amidst a glut of vulgar teenage gross-out comedies.
Most of the humor in The Princess Diaries revolves around Mia's attempts to act like a princess.
The film combines every girl's dream of transforming from an ugly duckling into a beautiful woman, and being a princess.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement Movie Review at Hollywood Video
PARENT'S NOTE: The Princess Diaries 2 is rated G, and there's nothing that would prevent even the youngest princess wannabes from watching—though "couple" scenes won't hold their interest as much as the cat, the dog, the baby, and the little girls in the film.
Instead of a bachelorette party, the princess throws a pajama party for other princesses, though she seems to be one of the few adults in p.j.s.
The conflict was one most girls would die for: either learn to become a swan of a princess and leave home, or stay true to the self and friends she grew up with.

But Trachtenberg's bubbly, believable performance carries the project in much same way as Anne Hathaway single-handedly made The Princess Diaries a success (incidentally, both 'Ice Princess' and The Princess Diaries are based on stories by Meg "if it doesn't have 'Princess' in the title, I didn't write it" Cabot).
