 Historical Figures - Henry VIII
Henry VIII (June 28, 1491 - January 28, 1547) was King of England from April 22 (crowned on June 24), 1509 until his death on January 28, 1547.
Henry VIII greatly improved English seapower, establishing dockyards at Woolwich and Deptford on the River Thames in south-east London, and instituting an efficient navy.
Henry died in 1547 (on the exact 90th anniversary of his father's birth) at Whitehall in London and was buried at Windsor.

The Private Life of Henry VIII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The film began in May 1536, contrasting the impending execution of Henry's second wife, Anne Boleyn (Merle Oberon), with his instant remarriage to her maid, the kind-hearted Jane Seymour (Wendy Barrie).
After Anne's execution, Henry (played by Charles Laughton), is married briefly to Queen Jane before her death in childbed eighteen months later.
It is famous for creating the public image of a jolly Henry VIII who gorged himself at public banquets and chased pretty women all day, which has tended to obscure the king's real-life brutality.

The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933)
The film chronicles the private life of the roistering 16th-century monarch and his relationships with five of his six wives, Anne Boleyn (Merle Oberon), Jane Seymour (Wendy Barrie), Anne of Cleves (Elsa Lanchester), Katherine Howard (Binnie Barnes) and Catherine Parr (Everley Gregg).
Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, is dispensed with by a prologue explaining that she was "too respectable to be included."
Henry next marries Anne of Cleves, whom he reluctantly beds uttering the words: "The things I've done for England" as he heads towards the bedchamber, Henry dislikes her, and later divorces.

Henry was no tyrant, as Richard III was; only in his last years did he become the fat, diseased autocrat of popular perception.
Henry was certainly suggestible and sometimes swayed by the opinions of others, but the evidence overwhelmingly suggests that for the most part he remained firmly in control.

Henry's last wife, Katherine Parr, is merely depicted as a loving and caring woman, watching out for Henry in his dotage.
The story tells the story of British King Henry VIII and his six wives; well, actually five wives since the film begins with Ann Bolynn (Merle Oberon) his second, and even then we don't see much of her because she is about to lose her head because of adultery.
Henry VIII's unusual life has been covered in many films, but this lavish early depiction has its own magic, primarily owing to Laughton's dynamic, Oscar-winning portrayal, in a role he was born to play.

The opening sequence, in which Henry's upcoming wife, Jane Seymour, selects her bridal gown as the chopping block is prepared for his departing spouse, Anne Boleyn, is both dramatic and perversely comedic.

Comedy Central: Movies - The Private Life of Henry VIII - Review
Charles Laughton's Oscar-winning performance as Henry VIII rises above the stuffy limitations of the period piece to give us a portrait as rounded and exuberant as any on film.
However, the sensual gusto in the scenes of Henry's indulgences is enthusiastically presented, and Korda deserves credit for giving us a very human portrait of this controversial figure.
Particularly entertaining are the exchanges between Henry and his prospective and coquettish wives (and mistresses), while some of the minor characters deliver wickedly insightful social criticism directed more at the state of the world's economy in 1933 than at the film's period.

Throughout the film, he manages to hold in tension Henry's greedy enjoyment of the trappings of power and his weary loathing for a life where everything, especially his sexual performance, is a matter of public interest.
Laughton's transformation from bullying womaniser to henpecked glutton is a masterly study of a man's decline into dotage, but it is still only the icing on the cake of an amazing exploration of the morbid doubts and fears underlying a seemingly virile masculinity.
