The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939), is a romantic drama film based on the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I (played by Bette Davis) and Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (played by Errol Flynn).
The film was directed by Michael Curtiz, and was based on the Maxwell Anderson play, Elizabeth the Queen, which had been successful on Broadway with Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt in the lead roles.
She had lobbied for Laurence Olivier to play the part of Essex, but Warner Brothers, nervous at giving the part to an actor who was relatively unknown in the United States, instead cast Errol Flynn, who was at the height of his success.

Robert Devereux, favourite of Queen Elizabeth I of England, is the best-known of the many holders of the title "Earl of Essex".
However, he overreached himself when he attempted an expedition to the Azores, and failed again as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a post which Elizabeth had forced on him because she felt he was becoming too haughty.
Having permanently fallen out with the queen, Essex unwisely attempted a political coup, raising a rebellion and attempting to seize control of the city of London on February 8, 1601.

Elizabeth fumes because she is more worried about stability for England, and does not want to go into debt financing Essex's wars.
She is portrayed as very much older than Essex, and while the film never references her age, she appears at least twn years his senior.
The screenplay also does a good job of giving screen time and depth to Elizabeth's inner court such that we understand them, and their motivations, and how those motivations figure into the story between Elizabeth and Essex, and how that leads to the ending, which though tragic, is perfectly logical.

Davis for a 30 year old woman is stupendous as Elizabeth, a woman in the autumn of her years who must make the heartbreaking choice between her desires and the demands that her status in life brought her.
Flynn, breaking from his swashbuckler roles, seized the dramatic demands of Essex, an impulsive man torn between his love for the Queen and his own ambitions.
The always superb Bette Davis brings a volatile coldness to the role of Elizabeth, and the scenes with Flynn (whom she disliked intensely) are extremely fine.
