wcbstv.com - 'The Producers' To End Broadway Run In April
The musical, which won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards including best musical, was based on Brooks' 1968 film about two charlatan producers who scam little old ladies out of their money to put on a flop Broadway show.
The St. James will house Brooks' next show, a stage version of another of his films, "Young Frankenstein." The musical is expected to open on Broadway this fall after a tryout in a city to be announced.
But "The Producers" became the first open-ended engagement to charge that much for a majority of its seats.

Broadway: The American Musical . Memorable Musicals . The Producers | PBS
The story was outrageous: flop-covered theatrical producer Max Bialystock realizes the road to his financial redemption lies in producing the worst musical ever written, raising 25,000 percent of the capital, and pocketing it all when the show is a one-night-only disaster.
Starring two of Broadway's best musical comedians, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, the show rocketed its way to Broadway (after a sell-out engagement in Chicago) with $17 million in advance sales -- less than half of "Miss Saigon"'s advance, but huge for a musical originating in America.
It won a record 12 Tony Awards, and when Lane and Broderick briefly returned to their roles in early 2004, they were the highest-paid performers in Broadway history.

RAY SUAREZ: It was that kind night for "The Producers"-- the Broadway phenomenon that took a record 12 Tony Awards including three for the musical's creator, Mel Brooks.
And that's a musical that is really about something that is sort of disturbing and upsetting in a lot of ways and also musical and wonderful.
Maybe the musical a forum for really expressing something is kind of over it by now, and this is just rehash, which is, you know, what Broadway is really about at this point.

CNN.com - Entertainment - Mel Brooks comes to Broadway with 'The Producers' - April 19, 2001
From the "Springtime for Hitler" number in "The Producers" (1968) to "The French Mistake" in "Blazing Saddles" to the title tune in "High Anxiety" (1977), his movies are full of all-stops-out song-and-dance numbers.
In "The Producers," Bialystock and Bloom's ruse is found out when their hoped-for flop, "Springtime for Hitler," becomes a huge hit.
The Broadway "Producers" also looks like a huge hit, but Brooks, fortunately, probably doesn't need to worry that he'll end up like his dishonest protagonists.
