The musical, which began life as a film written and directed in 1968 by Mel Brooks, has been credited with reviving the fortunes of Broadway and tempting jaded audiences back to the theatre.
And the demands of musical theatre took its toll on the 56-year-old who parted company with the show just days before the curtain was supposed to rise in the West End for preview performances.
The music was a clever plagiarism of Oliver, Chicago, Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof.

When that movie, The Producers, opened in 1968, it was not exactly met by a grateful public, but then Peter Sellers saw it and fell in love, going so far as to place an ad in Variety to sing its praises.
The musical could have used a little trimming by dropping a song or two, notably Lane's solo number, "Betrayed." On stage, it's a showstopper as he rushes through it recapping the show up to that point.
Unlike Chicago, in which Rob Marshall took a dance musical and filmed and edited it in such a way that one could never appreciate the dancing, Stroman wants moviegoers to see her choreography.

TheMovieBoy Review - The Producers (2005)
Quite the contrary, "The Producers" is an absolute train wreck of a movie, and has arrived on the scene at the most inopportune time.
They showed what the musical genre was all about, alive with joy and sincerity and occasional transcendence, raised even higher by often brilliantly assembled soundtracks that strengthened and deepened the stories being told.
The musical numbers, unevenly sprinkled throughout (two may immediately follow each other, or be spread twenty minutes apart), are deadly dull and spiritless, and that's even with award-winning choreographer Susan Stroman sitting in the director's chair.

In The Producers, a fabled theatre producer, Max Bialystock, and his accountant accomplice Leo Bloom hatch a plan to state a monster flop and pocket the residual investment.

He wrote two songs, "Springtime for Hitler," the show's extravaganza centerpiece, as well as the jailhouse finale, "Prisoners of Love." No theatrical producer would touch it, claiming there were too many scenes, too many characters and too many musicians in a pit band that would only play for two musical numbers.

Perhaps the most telling thing about "The Producers," the film version of Mel Brooks' Broadway musical hit based on his celebrated 1968 film comedy, is that the best two performances belong to Uma Thurman, as a Swedish smorgasbord of feminine delights known as Ulla, and Will Ferrell, as unrepentant Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind.
This "Producers," shot almost entirely on soundstages with only a few Manhattan exteriors, represents a historical record of the popular stage show, which earned 12 Tonys.
For that matter, all of Brooks' musical numbers, including the catchy "Springtime for Hitler" from the original film, are clever and fun.

It's springtime for ‘The Producers’ on screen - AT THE MOVIES - MSNBC.com
But the original is hardly a DVD owned by every household, so it’ll all be new to many movie-goers, and the new version does add some clever gags and has a supporting cast that often outshines that of the 1968 film, led by Uma Thurman, Will Ferrell, Roger Bart and Gary Beach.
So, all things considered: As the original was for 1968 audiences, the musical version of “The Producers” is about as much pure fun as you’ll have at the movies this year.
The howlingly funny “Springtime for Hitler” musical centerpiece is very reminiscent of the 1968 original, but the new songs Brooks wrote for the Broadway play are a strong and amusing crop, a big reason why “The Producers” became such a hit on stage.
