The Provoked Wife is the second original comedy written by John Vanbrugh.
The often-repeated claim that Vanbrugh wrote part of his comedy The Provoked Wife in the Bastille is based on allusions in a couple of much later memoirs, but is regarded with some doubt by modern scholars (see McCormick).
The Provoked Wife is a comedy, but Elizabeth Barry who played the abused wife was especially famous as a tragic actress, and for her power of "moving the passions", i.e., moving an audience to pity and tears.

So when the wife doteth foolishly upon her husband, and maketh an idol of him, then is she quickly ready to be jealous, whereas true and sound love would work the contrary effect in her.
So, if ever the wife will be comfortable, and profitable to her husband, and do any good in the family, she must have a care of her heart, and look that she carry an inward fear to her husband.
The wife then must persuade herself that her husband's charge is God's charge, and when he speaks, God speaks by him, and that which was a thing indifferent before the husband required it, is now become a bounden duty unto her, after the husband hath once enjoined it.

However, in total contradiction of the ancient canonical texts, she is now shown as a vibrant young woman, fully worthy of being Buddha's companion, born into a good family, virtuous, and able to love her spouse to a point that, although abandoned by him, she still decides to keep the same austerities as he does.
Amidst the important elements ignored by the Mahavastu, aside from the ordination of Yasodhara, are her rapid ascension to sainthood, Buddha's comments on her virtues which trampoline her to first place amongst all the saintly women involved with Buddha, and the fact that in between her and all the concubines come two other spouses.
In accordance with the tradition that calls Rahula Buddha's son it explains the total absence of the ancient wife of Buddha in all posterior episodes the big departure- as told by all the Sutrapitaka and by most Vinayapitaka, with the exception of the "scenette" where Yasodhara tells Rahula that he is Buddha's son.

On the other hand, remembering that the wife frequently kills in self-defense, removing the gun from her hand and replacing it with a knife might render her defense ineffectual, with the result that the husband becomes the homicide offender rather than the victim.
Thus, wife beaters are not clinically sick, and rejection of the illness model as an explanation of battering is, perhaps, the only point of agreement among current theorists.
Nonetheless, Wolfgang found that in 38 of the 47 spousal homicide cases in which the husband was killed, he had "strongly provoked" his wife’s attack "and, although she was not exonerated on grounds of self-defense, there had been sufficient provocation by the husband (as the victim) to reduce the seriousness of her offense.

 Wife Beating In Islam
To fully comprehend the issue of Islamic wife beating her position with respect to her husband must be first understood.
In Islamic thought, in Muhammad’s thought, the wife is not considered the husband’s equal, rather, she is an inferior, subordinate partner, who is to be treated gently and kindly, but still under the man’s authority.
“Al-nushuz means that the wife treats her husband with arrogance, refuses to join him in the marital bed; it is an expression of disobedience [al-may’siya] and an obvious unwillingness to any longer carry out what obedience to the husband requires.

Dear wife, this kind of beauty should be the goal for all of your communication, but especially with the person most important and closest to you-your husband.
The message is that a crabby, cranky, nagging, quarrelsome complaining, ill- tempered wife annoys her husband in the same way a constant drip gets on our nerves and "drives us crazy." In fact, as these proverbs report, it not only drives a husband crazy, but it can also drive him away.
Adding insult to injury, the other wife "provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb" (verse 6).
