The Pulteney Association was a purchaser in 1792 of a large portion of the Western New York land tract known as the Phelps and Gorham Purchase.
Nine-twelfths was owned by Sir William Johnstone Pulteney (1729-1805), a Scottish lawyer, two twelfths by William Hornby, former Governor of Bombay, and one-twelfth by Patrick Colquhoun, a Scottish merchant.
The Pulteney Purchase, or the Genesee Tract as it was also known, comprised all of the present counties of Ontario, Steuben and Yates, as well as portions of Allegany, Livingston, Monroe, Schuyler and Wayne counties.

They soon extinguished the Indian title to the portion of the land east of the Genesee River, as well as a 185,000 acre (749 kmandsup2) tract west of the Genesee ("The Mill Yard Tract"), surveyed all of it, laid out townships, and sold large parts to speculators and settlers.
In 1790, after they defaulted in payment, they sold nearly all of their unsold lands east of the Genesee to Robert Morris, who eventually resold those lands to The Pulteney Association.
Phelps and Gorham were unable to fulfill their contract in full to Massachusetts, so in 1790, they surrendered back to Massachusetts that portion of the lands which remained under the Indian title, namely, the land west of the Genesee.

On November 8, 1803, The Pulteney Association sold the 100 Acre Tract for $1,750, on a five-year land contract, to Col. Nathaniel Rochester(1752-1831), Maj. Charles Carroll, and Col. William Fitzhugh, all of Hagerstown, Maryland.

As the years pass, it becomes clear that a greater legacy of Saga is the way it changed people associated with it -- not only professionals in its ranks, but also hundreds of students for whom Saga was a really good job, providing memories, lessons, and (lest we forget) free steak on Saturday.
It's also satisfying that, ten years since it became Marriott run, the main dining center at the Scandling Center is referred to as "Saga" by current students.
