The Quest of Erebor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The Quest of Erebor" was originally written in the 1950s to be a part of The Lord of the Rings Appendices but Tolkien decided not to include it due to space limitations, and only a very abridged version of the tale occurred in Appendix A, III Durin's Folk.
"The Quest of Erebor" is written in the first person, from the perspective of Frodo Baggins.
However, nearly all the text consists of narration by Gandalf, who was telling the story at the request of Frodo in Minas Tirith after the coronation of King Elessar.

 The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Sauron's Right Arm (a southpaw, I presume)
While Erebor was sieged, the pass to the north of Ered Mithrim was cleared of defenders.
So, in sending Bilbo off with Thorin and company, Gandalf was hoping for the re-establishment of the realms of Erebor and Dale to provide protection against an invasion of Eriador by Sauron through the northern passes, while eliminating a potential (and powerful) ally for Sauron.
Well, I think that he recognised that, given his committments in the South and elsewhere, his army in the North would have been cut off, and quite possibly eliminated, by the forces that he was at that stage besieging.

One hundred and seventy one years before the start of the ‘Quest of Erebor’, the dragon Smaug had descended on Erebor, an ancient kingdom of the dwarves to the east of the Misty Mountains and beyond Mirkwood.
The idea of the quest came to the mind of Gandalf after he discovered Thráin, son of Thrór, in the dungeons of the Necromancer (who is really Sauron) at Dol Guldur.
And the day after that, he returned with the party of dwarves for an unexpected party, at which the plot to reclaim Erebor was revealed.

Until the events that unfolded in TA2941 with the Quest of Erebor, after the events of the Battle of the Five Armies, most of the Mountain Orcs had been destroyed, Beorn then invited men from far and wide to his land.
Together with these men Beorn founded The Beornings and became their first chieftain, most of the Beornings were the surviving kinsfolk of Beorn, while the others came from several villages of bold Woodmen and peoples related to the Rohirrim.
During the Quest of Erebor, Sauron had since moved back to Dol Guldur, fortunately at the same time, the Woodmen were journeying further north along the western edge of Mirkwood, until they had settled at the southwestern end of the Old Forest Road.
