		The entire city is deserted, except for a single, confused man. This chilling premise is the opening of Geoff Murphy's "The Quiet Earth," an intriguing science fiction movie from New Zealand.
		Although based on a novel by Craig Harrison, "The Quiet Earth" bears several uncanny similarities with the 1959 film "The World, the Flesh and the Devil." In that film, Harry Belafonte also finds himself in a deserted city, namely Manhattan.
		All in all, "The Quiet Earth" is a thoughtful science fiction outing, and Anchor Bay's release should appease the fans who have waited too many years for it to make its way to the digital format.

		The Quiet Earth followed up a quiet American theatrical release in 1985 with a short life as a curiosity on cable TV and VHS, where its arresting key art attracted fantasy fans.
		Fifties science fiction movies were quick to discover the morbid thrill of the 'depopulated Earth' concept, in which humanity has mysteriously disappeared or been driven away by a cataclysmic atomic war, a verminous plague, or even an alien invasion.
		The Quiet Earth is one of those movies best seen without too many spoilers, which makes us wonder if it was necessary for the theatrical trailer (included) to reveal so many of the show's surprises.

		It is called The Quiet Earth, and from what I understood was one of the better ‘last man on Earth’ scenarios committed to film.
		The production work on The Quiet Earth is phenomenal in that the scenes of an empty city are beautifully filmed.
		Believe it or not, I saw THE QUIET EARTH on its theatrical run in the mid-’80s, and I thought it was one of the best films of the year.

		The "last man on Earth" sci-fi sub-genre is reasonably well represented by director Geoff Murphy's The Quiet Earth, a 1985 film from New Zealand that earned plenty of Kiwi kudos in its day but still fails to measure up to the great expectations engendered by its premise.
		Bruno Lawrence is Zac Hobson, a techie who's involved in "Project Flashlight," a vast energy grid that allows war planes to circle the planet without ever refueling (leave it to "the Americans," who are blamed for the whole ensuing mess, to come up with such a diabolical idea).
		I actually enjoyed the parts with Lawrence by himself the most, especially the sequences where he went a little loopy and was running around a vacant city in a woman's slip brandishing a shotgun.
