He Was A Quiet Man | film reviews | musicOMH.com
He was a Quiet Man focuses on Bob: an generic trampled office drone with a deranged streak, who fantasises daily about taking a gun to his workplace and murdering a hit-list of hated colleagues.
The catch is that, on the day Bob finally decides to “go postal”, a fellow co-worker beats him to it, and so by having his gun ready and loaded Bob is jolted in a moment from murderer to hero.
But in the end, A Quiet Man is an uninteresting film held together by Slater and Macy and, like Bob himself, is only brought given life for a moment by the efforts of Cuthbert.

Although one of Hollywood's most popular leading ladies of the 1940s and early 1950s, she never received an Oscar nomination for any of her performances, and the Academy's failure to recognize her work in THE QUIET MAN was the most glaring omission of her film career.
Beyond her own work in THE QUIET MAN, O'Hara also contributes significantly to Wayne's performance in their scenes together.
Though Winton C. Hoch's Technicolor cinematography naturally favors O'Hara and her red hair, she doesn't upstage Wayne with her reactions or otherwise distract the audience from the subtleties of his performance which is at once, tormented, temperate, and effectual.

For in America--where, as Sean once plaintively says, all a man has to do is honk his horn outside the house and the girl comes running out--brothers or parents or family or community have no part in such matters.
Mary Kate's insistence on her rights of dowry culminates in the scene where, her brother having been at last shamed into handing over her fortune, she moves in perfect concert with Sean, throwing open the door of the threshing furnace as he picks the banknotes up off the ground and throws them into the flames.
It is a ritual meant as well to reintegrate Red Will Danaher, who as a gombeen man or acquisitive purchaser of other people's property has throughout the film displayed proto-American tendencies toward what C.B. Macpherson labeled the ideology of possessive individualism.

The Quiet Man is a film that John Ford fans love, while his detractors point to it as displaying all of his sins: a lazy narrative, long detours into humorous drinking and fistfights, an oversentimentalized image of Ireland.
