The Race for the Double Helix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Race for the Double Helix (also known as Double Helix and Life Story) is a 1987 TV film dramatisation of the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953.
The film tells the story of the rivalries of the two teams in the race to the discovery - Francis Crick and James D. Watson at Cambridge University and Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin at King's College London.
All of this is insightfully examined in the supplementary materials to the Norton Critical Edition of Watson's book The Double Helix (ISBN 0393950751), to which the film makes a fine companion.

The Double Helix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA is an autobiographical account of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA written by James D. Watson and published in 1968.
It was and remains a controversial account, and though it was originally slated to be published by Harvard University Press, Watson's home university dropped the arrangement after protestations from Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, co-discoverers of DNA, and it was published privately.

In the model they construct that week, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) takes the shape of a spiral staircase (a "double helix," in geometrical terms), with the steps composed of pairs of molecules known as bases, and the formed by chains of sugar and phosphate molecules.

 The Double Helix
The race to figure out the structure of DNA ended when a young American biochemist named James Watson and a British physicist named Francis Crick published a short paper in 1953.
Because of the three-dimensional shape of the structure they discovered, DNA has come to be described as a "double helix." A helix is a spiral shape, like a slinky or the hand rail of a spiral staircase.
The double stranded nature of DNA turns out to be a vital functional part of its structure--it couldn't do what it does if it weren't double stranded.

Indeed, the double helix explains just how genes are passed on, from cell to cell, generation to generation.
Part of the explanation is the book that Watson published in 1968, a bestselling memoir that recounted the rivalries, professional and personal, in the DNA race.
Further explanation is no doubt the loveliness of the shape Watson and Crick discovered: the double helix, with its sugar-phosphate backbone and its rungs of nucleotide pairs, has become one of the unforgettable icons of science, akin to the old “planetary model” of the atom.
