Brynner's work was also showcased in two other films in 1956, as the stubborn Pharaoh Rameses II facing Charlton Heston's Moses in The Ten Commandments, and as Bounine, a White Russian prince in Anastasia opposite Best Actress Award-winner Ingrid Bergman.
It was her first American film in many years in the role of a Paris derelict saved by three White Russians and trained to pose as the missing, but surviving daughter of last czar of Russia - Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra.
The affair was all-the-more scandalous because of her appearance in wholesome and chaste Oscar-nominated film roles, such as The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) and Joan of Arc (1948).

The Rainmaker is big-hearted hokum, fun to laugh at but -- with its Roy Rogers-era Western family, unmarriageable-woman crisis, and big-talking con-man catalyst -- hard to take seriously.
John Newton, Tony Ward, and Tommy Day Carey are the Curry men, well-meaning widower H.C., bossy brother Noah, and enthusiastic knucklehead Jim, whose attentions are divided between the lack of rain that is killing their cattle and the lack of a gentleman caller for Lizzie.
In the end, however, she must choose between the romantic fakery of the rainmaker and the taciturn steadiness of the deputy.

The film is good, although I wouldn´t rate it as highly as many of the other films featuring these stars.
This is one of those films where the Bryn Mawr accent of the leading actress works against the character, but then the whole idea of Hepburn playing a rube--with costumes by Edith Head no less--is a bit of a stretch to start.

But the rancher's spinster daughter (Katharine Hepburn) is skeptical--until Lancaster makes lightning strike her heart, with the unexpected consequence of the rainmaker falling in love with her.

Rain, more rain and rainmakers - musings and writings of Barbara W. Klaser
We’ve had a wet season in Southern California, and while the weather warmed up and turned dry again yesterday, after the previous day’s cold drizzle, we still aren’t sure if the rainy season is over, or whether this will turn out to be the third wettest, second wettest or the wettest year on record.
Then there was the 1956 film, The Rainmaker, with Burt Lancaster as a charismatic vagabond who didn’t seem able to make it rain until nearly everyone had given up on him as a cheat.
If too much of it doesn’t cause floods or overgrowth of underbrush, drought can lead to its own forms of disaster, with wildfires, which wreaked havoc in my home county in fall of 2003 and destroyed landscape that was home to some of my fondest memories.

DVD Verdict Review - The Rainmaker (1956)
This 1956 film version, anchored by stars Katharine Hepburn (Bringing Up Baby) and Burt Lancaster (The Crimson Pirate), effectively captures the heart and the humor of Nash's play.
In The Rainmaker, the pace does sometimes slow to an amble, and sometimes the performances do tend a bit toward the theatrical—and it's all too obvious that the Curry farm is an indoor set.
Perhaps most important, although the film seems to be set in contemporary times, the play was set in the 1920s, and the screenplay doesn't make any changes to update the period.

It was first seen on Broadway, at the Cort Theatre in October 1954, with Joseph Anthony directing a cast that included Geraldine Page as Lizzie, the young woman afraid of becoming an old maid, Darren McGavin as braggart Starbuck, and Cameron Prud'homme as the father of Lizzie and her two brothers.
(This Rainmaker is not to be confused with the novel by John Grisham and its subsequent film version.) With Prud'homme repeating his Broadway role, the film cast included Lloyd Bridges and Earl Holliman as the brothers and Wendell Corey as deputy sheriff File.
The film begins with Starbuck conning the folks in another town, then arriving in Three Point, where the action is set.

The play, set in drought-ridden middle-America in the 1930s, is the story of a lonely spinster (played by Broadway veteran Jayne Atkinson) who is given hope by roving con artist Bill Starbuck (Harrelson).
The original production starred screen legend Geraldine Page and was later turned into a 1956 film starring Hepburn and Lancaster.
Rainmaker marks Harrelson's first leading role on Broadway, though he was an understudy for Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues in 1984 and has numerous off-Broadway theater experiences under his belt.

Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker has always attracted the most flamboyant of performers, and this 1956 film version is no exception.
Burt Lancaster all but bursts from the screen with his arm-waving portrayal of a confidence artist who works the drought-ridden Southwest, promising to bring rain for a flat fee of a hundred bucks.
The probing lens of the movie camera does little to hide the fact that virtually everyone in the film is too old for their roles, but The Rainmaker makes up its shortcomings with sheer unbridled energy.

The universality of its themes may be the secret of its success: Although some contemporary critics derided it as sentimental, its depiction of recognizable insecurities and the need for faith in dreams -- and in oneself -- gives it enduring appeal.

Prud'Homme, a radio and television actor who made few big-screen appearances, is a kind, warm-hearted presence as the head of the Curry family, a man whose easygoing nature seems to have permitted -- or prompted -- his son Noah to assume responsibility for the family.

The one problem with this Rainmaker happens to be, in fact, the rainmaker himself.
The character of Starbuck in Nash’s 1954 romantic comedy is larger than life, a swaggering fellow who has to dominate the proceedings as soon as he enters.
(Darren McGavin originated the role on Broadway, and Burt Lancaster played it in the 1956 film version.) Perhaps director Lisa Peterson was trying for a less overtly macho characterization with her casting of the more easy-going Michael Laurence, but his interpretation just doesn’t work with the material.

A CurtainUp Review, The Rainmaker -- On Broadway   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
When I saw the Williamstown Theatre Festival revival of The Rainmaker two summers ago, nature imitated stagecraft by sending a shower of rain on the intermission crowds on the Adams Memorial lawn.
This miracle of modern stage craft also symbolizes the end of two droughts -- the real drought that threatens the livelihood of an unnamed farm community in the Dust Bowl during the Depression of the 1930s and the spiritual drought that envelops the people at the center of N. Richard Nash's forty-six-year-old comedy drama.
Jeannie Callahan's adventure with this play began with the 1982 cable TV movie starring Tommy Lee Jones (The Rainmaker actually began life as a television drama in 1952 and like numerous other plays of that golden era of television moved to Broadway two years later).

This is not due to any serious flaws in the production, but rather to the fact that Nash's highly romantic, intentionally artificial story and style plays much more naturally on-stage.
Placed on film, the language seems a little stilted, the plot a little schematic; in addition, some modern viewers may not be totally comfortable with the implication that Lizzie needs a man to in some way spur her on to fulfilling her potential and completing her life.
The Rainmaker may miss out on being great drama, but as a showcase for its performers, it's hard to beat.

dOc DVD Review: The Rainmaker (1956)
Made in a pre-home video age, the film is shot almost entirely in master shots; the almost complete absence of close-ups may have been intended to replicate the feel of the proscenium, but unfortunately on your television it works to keep you from getting involved in the action.
I admit to feeling rather curmudgeonly, giving what's at best a lukewarm review to a film that's much loved by some; but memory can play tricks, and this one doesn't hold up well at all under re-examination.
Just about every scene is loaded with imperfections, rips and color distortionsÑit can be very unpleasant to look at.
