In his liner notes to the album The Raven, Reed touches on the parallels between their work when he writes, "I have reread and rewritten Poe to ask the same questions again.
The pitch of the acting is sometimes a bit sharp (especially Dafoe, who seems to be projecting to the last row of the balcony), but the con brio performances certainly suit the tenor of the material and Poe's writing style.
Musically, The Raven is all over the map, leaping from low-key acoustic pieces to full-bore, window-rattling rock and roll, with a number of stops along the way.

Review | The Raven by Lou Reed
Like those stellar figures, Reed has not been the best or the most popular, and he certainly isn't the most consistent, but his contributions to his medium are so singular and influential that the story of rock music simply cannot be told without him.
A truly stunning chunk of the sound, style, and concerns of the avant-garde have been forged from the four albums he concocted with the Velvet Underground.
It would be reasonable to expect an album full of spook and shadows since it's coming from and about two men who made their careers out of such things, but instead, the tone is largely bright and slick.

Edgar Allan Poe was a man who usually looked on the dark side of life, had more than a few less-than-healthy romantic and sexual obsessions, was known to dabble in dangerous drugs, and was fascinated with the possibilities of the English language, so it's no wonder why Lou Reed regards Poe as a kindred spirit.

This album is definitely for the choosey listener interested in a sound and craft that alludes most of the stuff you can buy off the shelf these days.
Raven laces most of the tracks with his own rhymes, even though he is a self-proclaimed "producer before emcee." On "Keep On," Raven describes his style like "a musical Anne Rice: sensual, moody, dark, exotic/take my time with the beats, till they playin' nice.
While this album isn't the ideal choice for the fan looking for extraordinary lyrical agility, if you want to listen to some musically-inspiring, head-bangin' tracks that move beyond flippin' ki's, pimpin' hos and rockin' ice -- this one's for you.

The Raven was born following a spoken-word performance of Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" during which Reed "came to understand it in a way I never had before." Accordingly, The Raven may strike Reed's longtime fans in a way the artist never has before.
Nonetheless, THE RAVEN is very much an experimental album, and with the possible exception of 1990's SONGS FOR DRELLA, his most varied album.
