Faith No More's "The Real Thing" was in many ways, the band's real debut-- with vocalist Mike Patton joining during the recording sessions, replacing the departed Chuck Mosley.
Faith No More, Being the first album featuring their amazing Singer Mike Patton (I think this is the first Album he was in).
But that's beside the point, as "The Real Thing" was, and is, a classic album that marks one of the high-water points of alternative music.

The one thing that’s too bad is that they couldn’t reproduce the success of this album.
The album proved to be a crossover hit for the previously ignored band.
But, as with most bands, this was not their first album.

eBay - CD: The Real Thing
Up until Faith No More's third release, 1989's THE REAL THING, the San Francisco quintet was considered too eccentric for rock's mainstream.
The rap-metal anthem "Epic" was a surprise Top-10 smash (pushing the album to multi-platinum status), while such other tracks as "From Out of Nowhere," "Falling to Pieces," "Zombie Eaters," and "Underwater Love" were just as exceptional.
While it took a few months for sales to crest, THE REAL THING went on to become the group's much sought-after commercial breakthrough.

If you are new to Faith No More plump for either "The Real Thing" if you want catchy as hell tunes from the late 80s, or "Angel Dust", their finest work in all its schizophrenic glory.
The last Faith no more album was not their best, not their most creative but is still has some truely amazing songs on it.
Highlights include 'Stripsearch' the electronic soother, 'Last Cup of sorrow' a truely great hard song and 'Ashes to Ashes' which is one of the greatest songs that Faith no more wrote.

Album of the Year is not what FNM were in their earlier years with 'The Real Thing' and 'Angel Dust', rather more of a move...
After years of tension and fighting, the band Faith No More called it quits not long after the release of "Album of the Year".
Faith No More was always one of my favorites, so maybe I am a little biased, but this album was awesome.

 No More Faith
With Faith No More's fourth studio album, "Angel Dust," Patton had more time to compose as a full-fledged member of the band, and Gould, Bottum, and Bordin, thanks to the success of "The Real Thing," had more confidence in their ability to create the album they wanted to.
In two weeks he had written lyrics for the songs Faith No More was working on for their next album, and "The Real Thing" was released six months later.
The subsequent tour brought Faith No More a good deal of press in Europe, but when the tour was over the rest of the band chose to fire Mosely due to his constant drinking, limited vocal capabilities, and squabbles with bandmates.

 Mr. Bungle: California: Pitchfork Review
Bungle's eponymous major-label debut, advertised as a "Mike Patton side project," was just such an album, not to mention anything Faith No More put out after The Real Thing.
Thus, California-- another one of those albums that you can't believe a major label had anything to do with.
The more I listen to California, the more I'm convinced that Mike Patton is really the devil on holiday.

This whole album is a journey through faith in knowing the real God and knowing that He is real." He concludes, "The closest thing we can relate with the Bible is fiction or fantasy or sci-fi.
The album kicks of with an acoustic intro to the title cut, that is reminiscent of the beginning of BON JOVI's "Wanted, Dead or Alive." In fact, there are several musical similarities to BON JOVI throughout the album, but without the overblown attitude that the popular mainstream band has been known to show.
But, we wanted to start it from the ground up--from the songs on an album project where every aspect of the project would follow this whole message and theme and creative flow.

 Amazon.co.uk: Introduce Yourself: Music
Forget everything you know about faith no more and listen to this album as one produced by a different band and you will love it.
I know it's become almost a cliche but this album would have been a million times better had Mike Patton been there to replace Mosely's monotonous tone with his own vocal wizardry. The only songs in my opinion that are worth listening to are We Care Alot, Introduce Yourself and The Crab Song.
When people talk about FNM they always refer to the Real Thing onwards, and appear to forget that FNM existed before Mike Patton.

Angel Dust (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Later versions of the album feature a cover of the Commodores ' 'Easy' as the final track, which in some parts of the world was Faith No More's most successful single.
The Real Thing, Angel Dust is a very complex and at times hard to approach album.
These unusual moments arguably make the album unique amongst the band's output, at a time when they were beginning to lose out to Grunge in the commercial stakes.

Faith No More - Album of the Year vs. Angel Dust... - The CHUD.COM Message Boards
King For a Day IS the sort of album that you can instantly fall in love with- and its an album they made for themselves, since they didn't have the label, fan or critical response hoping for another Real Thing.
I can't say Album of the Year is a better album on a technical level than King for a Day, but for my personal tastes it just seems wittier, crazier, and yet much more elegant.
Of the others, I haven't heard Mit Gas, was kind of disappointed with the first Tomahawk, and I only have Director's Cut from Fantomas, which I like better than the Tomahawk album (and maybe even better than Volante and the s/t Bungle).

Amazon.com: Angel Dust: Music: Faith No More
An album that is very unique and sometimes hard to approach, Faith No More's "Angel Dust", the 1992 successor to their 1989 breakthrough "The Real Thing", is a masterpiece on all levels; an album without a single weak track to keep it down nor a song that breaks its amazingly consistent flow.
And little wonder - as not only did the album destroy any commercial hopes they had (which was probably zero) but more than that, it was such a brilliant album, that it was impossible to top it.
This album is like Tool's "aenima" without the unlikely success and an influence on more than their fair share of modern metal acts.
