The Rebel (1961 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The film The Rebel (1961) is a satirical comedy starring the British comedian Tony Hancock, and written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
The film explores existentialist themes by mocking Parisian intellectual society in general and portraying the pretensions of the English lower middle class in particular.
Although the film did moderately well, it was not well received in the USA, who possibly did not understand the highly anglocentric humour.

The Rebel - The Boston Globe
In ''Rebel," Jim asks his father, ''What can you do when you have to be a man?" Dean's stylish response to his own character's question was the persona that achieved its fullest expression in ''Rebel": a classic mixture of confidence, good hair, and smoldering sensitiveness from which millions of men have taken lessons.
By the time of the film's release Ray had already emerged as, in Frascella and Weisel's words, ''the 'test case' and the 'cause celebre"' of the so-called auteur theory (briefly, the concept that the director of a commercial film can, in some cases, be considered that film's ''author").
Instead, it's a film in which the urge to rebel and the longing to conform coexist in a state of peak tension.

DVD : Tony Hancock: The Rebel / The Punch And Judy Man [1960] : reviews
The Rebel (1961) and The Punch and Judy Man (1963) are the only two feature films made expressly as star vehicles for the great television comic Tony Hancock.
The Rebel is by far the more ambitious, being in colour with Parisian locations, a large cast, and not least a supporting role for international star George Sanders.
Filmed in fl-and-white in Bognor Regis, The Punch and Judy Man is a more modest yet evocative portrait of life in a small coastal resort.

 Cuban Rebel Girls
The film ends with newsreel-style footage of Castro's victory parade into Havana, and additional footage of the bedlam at the airports and harbors, where Batista's sympathizers fled the country in panic.
The film might have ended there, but Flynn apparently felt that he had not yet achieved his daily quotient of cheese, so we see Flynn turn his back on the parade, and lumber from the balcony to his bedroom.
Films rated below five are generally awful even if you like that kind of film - this score is roughly equivalent to one and a half stars from the critics or a D on our scale.

 The Rebel (1961)
The Rebel was Tony Hancock’s only truly successful film after years of popularity with his Hancock’s Half Hour TV series.
His point was that James had been appearing without Hancock for years in films; now Hancock wanted to show that he could make his own mark in the cinema without having to rely on James.
The film was premiered at the Beirut Film Festival, and given a trade showing in London on January 27th 1961.

Central Europe Review - Croatian film in the 1990s
The late 1980s were generally a period of crisis for the old-fashioned European auteur film, as a postmodernist mentality and Hollywood's economic boom shifted filmmakers' interests toward narration, genre films and an ironic twist on popular-culture traditions.
Perhaps the most important factor behind the golden age of Yugoslav cinema was the fact that Tito was a film fan who regularly attended the national film festival in Pula and who, as legend holds, always kept a couple of reels of American Westerns in the cellar projection room of his villa.
The film, finished in autumn 1999, was used by the then-ruling Croatian Democratic Community (HDZ) to try to increase anti-Communist hysteria during the election campaign, which brought about the defeat of Tuđman's party.

Her early films combined cinéma vérité with daring experimentation to launch spirited, madly stylish attacks on sexism and materialism.
Her impressive graduation film, Ceiling (1961), provided a harbinger of Chytilová’s defiant themes and daring aesthetic strategies, and drew on her own experiences in modelling.
Chytilová’s subsequent films retained much of her iconoclastic bent and acerbic bite, even as they as moved, eventually, towards a more realist aesthetic approach.

Working on the film in secret from his home, locked out of the real decision-making process during the last months of principle shooting, reduced as he described it "to the role of a competent secretary", Trumbo was finally smuggled onto the studio lot to view the film's first rough cut.
For Trumbo, the rest of the film was to consist of scenes alternating between the love story, the slave community, and the Roman political struggle, with all this punctuated by a series of bitter battle scenes and successive victories for the slaves over larger and larger Roman armies.

Through this complexity the film earns its place in the Rebel Samurai box, as well as Shinoda's oeuvre: The romance of feudal Japan's honor and duty is exposed as a sham in the director's tale of subterfuge, deceit, and murderous self-interest.
Comparing the two films, Kurosawa's penchant for lean, concise narrative shines through, as well as his standard operating procedure of rifling source materials for the elements he finds interesting, jettisoning the rest, and embellishing his adapted script with his own material.
Each of the films is available as part of this set, or individually (spine numbers 310 through 313) as part of Criterion's supplement-light budget line of releases.

 Rebel, The Review (1961)
The Rebel is basically a spin-off from Hancock's Half Hour, the radio and television series that shot Hancock to fame.
In the film, Hancock has the soul of a great artist trapped in the body of a mediocre man. As always, he has ideas that far outweigh his abilities, but once he gets to Paris he finds something that his character never found on TV - acceptance of his grand ideals.
Of course, it's acceptance by people who are as equally pretentious as he is - the film has a noticeable element of the Great British Public's suspicion of all things artistic.
