  Ani DiFranco - Revelling/Reckoning | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, ...
Which is not to say Revelling/Reckoning, her multi-layered double album and twelfth release in eleven years (not counting last fall's Swing Set EP) is trite or easy with the gimmicks.
The songs on the album's second half drift up in clouds of blue cigarette smoke and smell slightly of stale beer, distinct reminders of the seedy clubs in which DiFranco undoubtedly toiled for years as a struggling folk singer.
With the rate at which DiFranco releases albums, it might be easy to think she sacrifices quality for quantity.

Her lyrics have also received praise for their sophistication: alliteration (and wordplay in general) is an important component, and a more or less gentle irony fills many of her songs—especially those that deal with the intersection of the personal and political.
In various songs and albums, she has used a variety of instruments as well as styles—from brass, notably in 1998's Little Plastic Castle, and strings, particularly noticeable on the live album Living in Clip and her latest studio recording, Knuckle Down.
She has released at least one album every year since 1990, except in 2000 (perhaps because she released three albums in 1999 and a double album in 2001.) 1990 is a common year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar.

Their debut album, Murmur (1983), is held to be one of the best records of the 1980s.
The album is described in the liner notes as "A little bit of uh-huh and a whole lot of oh-yeah".
The album was followed by a massive tour during which drummer Bill Berry suffered a brain hemorrhage on stage, which would eventually lead to his leaving the band.

Tartarean Desire Webzine - Best albums of 2004
The longest song on "Reckoning Night" is a mid-tempo ballad with an epic touch called "White Pearl, Black Ocean" which reminds me a bit of "The Power Of One" or "The Ruins Of My Life" on their past albums.
The last album "Eternal" marked the end of a transition for the band as they step by step detached themselves from their fl metal past, re-inventing not only themselves but an entire genre for that matter, leaving old fans with either love or disgust in their minds.
The album does have a very fl metal sound, but this atmosphere is still weakened and filtered through Darkthrone's stubborn adherence to slower rock and punk stylings that devastate the possibility of this album rising to become a landmark.

As far as ranking of R.E.M. albums I would say that this falls in the middle for me. While this album isn’t amazing it isn’t awful, it is a good solid album.

In true Stumptown fashion, the album was recorded and mixed at the Division Street outlet after-hours and released in a limited run of 500 signed copies pressed on special heavy-duty vinyl.
At first, listening to the album made me feel like I had just watched one of those movies that strips you of your emotions, beats them up, and slaps them back together using cheap glue, all willy-nilly.

On the surface, Reckoning may not be as distinctive as Murmur, but the record's influence on underground American rock in the '80s was just as strong.
Opening with the ringing "Harborcoat," Reckoning runs through a set of ten jangle pop songs that are different not only in sound but in style from the debut.
What I don't like about the album is that it has only 10 songs and clocks in at under 40 minutes, so it almost feels it is over as soon as it starts.

"Reckoning" is one of the top five R.E.M. albums in my opinion and probably my second favorite of the IRS years (behind "Document", and slightly edging out "Life's Rich Pageant").
This album is a great one for getting a glimpse at that free-spirited, youthful time during the band's evolution to what it is today.
"Reckoning" is R.E.M's umpteenth great album but to those not familiar with R.E.M.'s early work, it may sound perhaps a bit unpolished and raw compared to the later albums released under the Warner Bros. label.

I’m still not sure that it is as good as Winterheart’s Guild in that aspect, but it’s a hell of a lot better than my first impression (which turned out to be that the bass had been turned way up on my stereo, making the production sound like ass and balls slapping together).
I feel that the songs are initially slightly under par with the rest of their catalogue as a whole, though much more consistant as well making Reckoning Night a very strong album.
