Waterloo Region's bylaw requires all enclosed places accessible to the public to be 100 per cent smoke-free -- including bleachers in arenas during public events, stairwells and hallways of apartment buildings, bars, restaurants, bowling centres and bingo halls.
Brian Hatton, Waterloo Region's director of environmental health, said his 26 bylaw enforcement officers -- plus another two soon to be hired -- will start enforcing the public-smoking ban by the middle of next week.
Although most bars, restaurants and other public places in the region are complying with the law, about 40 of 1,100 premises visited by the health department are not, Hatton said this week.

Though it began in Kitchener it soon came to include Waterloo and now also covers Cambridge and the surrounding area.
The former headquarters, on Fairway Road in Kitchener, is where the paper itself was once published; as printing is now offsite, the staff moved out and the building will soon be demolished.

Arnold Attwooll, the owner of the Walper Pub and Reggie's restaurant in the Walper Terrace Hotel and the Pony Club in downtown Kitchener, pleads with regional council to change its bylaw banning smoking in indoor public places.
If we were to vote on it tonight, quite likely there'd be no changes to the bylaw," Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr said early this morning after listening to more than 80 delegates praise and pan the bylaw.
