doctorwho: The Doctor Who Novels of Ian Marter
Doctor Who and the Ark in Space is a really good read, to the point where Andrew Wrixon at the Doctor Who Ratings Guide blames Marter for making him unable to enjoy the original version as much as he does the novel.
The two Second Doctor stories among this lot are not considered classics; "The Enemy of the World" was the one story of the famous fifth season that did not feature monsters, and I watched "The Dominators" a week ago as part of this project and thought it was pretty poor.
The intial set-up between the Doctor and Romana is changed substantially, and in my view not for the better; in the TV version, the White Guardian tells the Doctor that he will be assigned an assistant, and the Doctor when he encounters her spends the first few minutes practically hiding from her behind K-9.

The Reign of Terror is a serial in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in six weekly parts from August 8 to September 12, 1964.
The story was set in France during the period of the French Revolution known as the Reign of Terror.
They are soon taken to an audience with “The Tyrant of France” himself, who appears as both a zealot and a psychopath with his constant talk of needing to increase the pace of execution.

The Reign of Terror is notable as being the first Doctor Who story to feature real historical events - in this case the fall of Robespierre - and also for being the first occasion the series included deliberately humorous elements such as the character of the jailer.
The whole tone of the story is downbeat as the Doctor and his companions seek to escape from the most radical and controversial phase of the French Revolution.
Doctor Who was undoubtedly a product of its times, but it lasted so long as a TV show because it changed its format so much.

'The Reign of Terror' was the final story of Doctor Who's first season.
The story was originally wiped from the BBC's archives, but episodes 1-3 and 6 have been recovered from a foreign TV station and a private film collector.
The story is set in 1794 in and around Paris, during the French Revolution - the 'Reign of Terror' refers to Robespierre's infamous mass executions of the nobility and anyone else he felt was a threat to him.

For Who historians, the most important footage here is from Troughton's first appearance as the Doctor in season 5's "The Power of the Daleks," which is missing in its entirety; a rough glimpse of the transition from actor William Hartnell to Troughton is included, along with other surviving fragments.
The sad reality about Doctor Who, is that a fair number of the earliest episodes of the program have not survived, so we are left with certain early stories which only have the occasional episode in existence.
For those who aren't familiar with the history of this show, back in the 70's, a bunch of BBC executives decided they wanted to save money in storage space by destroying a bunch of tapes containing episodes of many of their old shows.

In July 2001, Dapol announced that it would cease all production of Doctor Who action figures, and embarked on a range of cold-cast four-inch-scale statues instead; mere months after that, the BBC elected not to renew Dapol's license to make Doctor Who toys.

There are currently 108 episodes of Doctor Who that are currently missing from the BBC archives.
(This process was used to successfully color episodes from "Doctor Who and the Silurians", "Terror of the Autons", and "The Dæmons".) The BBC was somewhat successful with Episode 5, but the quality of the colorized Episode 6 was so poor that they decided not to try the rest of these episodes.
When they finally decided to release this episode on video, they incorporated as much of the usable color footage as possible, resulting in episodes that were a mixture of color and fl-and-white.
