The Rescuers Down Under is the twenty-ninth animated feature in the Disney animated features canon, produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, and was released by Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution on November 16, 1990.
The Rescuers Down Under had the familiar characters from the first Rescuers movie, the mice Bernard (Bob Newhart) and Bianca (Eva Gabor).
On its first release, The Rescuers Down Under was preceded by a short subject starring Mickey Mouse in an adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper.

The Rescuers Down Under Movie Review at Hollywood Video
This sequel to the popular Rescuers wisely avoids the sugary songs of the original, peppering a thoroughly enjoyable tale of heroic mice, a brave young boy, and a gaggle of inspired creatures with innovative computer animation (with help from Pixar) to create a stunning Australian-set adventure for the whole family.
Once they land, the rescuers find their way through the strange Australian landscape and even stranger creatures with the help of a charming and fearless kangaroo mouse named Jake (Tristan Rogers), who's quite taken with the lovely Bianca.
Rescuers Down Under keeps the story moving at an engaging pace, and the comic characterizations keep the mood light in spite of some of the dire situations like Cody's being kept in a cage or snapped at by a hungry crocodile.

While TRDU remains a minor Disney work, it's a fairly fun one, and it easily outdoes the movie upon which it was based.
TRDU, on the other hand, may seem light and basic compared to its era-mates, but the film itself is fairly entertaining.
While The Rescuers Down Under will never qualify as one of Disney's classics, and it's probably always going to seem weak when compared to the studio's other work from the era, on its own it offers a moderately delightful experience.

The contrast between The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under is dramatic in the extreme.
While The Rescuers is a very statically shot and "old school" animated feature, The Rescuers Down Under features many innovations that would become a hallmark of Disney animation during the 90s and even a precursor to the big Hollywood style of Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
This was a real surprise package in regards to the standard of animation, considering the fairly ordinary animation of the The Rescuers, which relied on the charm of the characterizations of the main cast and not on any great technical achievements.

Something of a dry run for the computer animation that would be exploited in its later films, The Rescuers Down Under is an exciting and entertaining film that succeeds because of its visual appeal rather than because of a compelling story or deft characterization.
Using rotoscoping and multi-plane cameras in addition to computer animation and hand-drawn cels, Down Under has a number of action sequences that are quite thrilling (and which prepared Disney for similar tasks in Aladdin).
In the sequel to the Rescuers the animation is far better than the original film.

Back in the early nineties, there was a film that past virtually unnoticed, lost in the shadows of the high-profile The Little Mermaid and Beauty and The Beast.
The first animated sequel and first action-adventure animation film, The Rescuers Down Under, was different from the others produced then because it didn’t have any songs, only score.
It is an adventure story about a couple of mice that answer a call to rescue a little boy kidnapped by an eagle poacher in the outback of Australia.

 Broughton: The Rescuers Down Under
Bruce Broughton was right at the start of his "family movie" scores when he did The Rescuers Down Under in 1990, an unsuccessful sequel to a Disney film that most people had forgotten anyway.
Most surprising is that instead of the predictable kiddies's songs, Disney went "all score" and so Broughton was given a chance to prove his colours.
As a somewhat dubious "bonus" they tacked on three disposable songs from The Rescuers at the end - I'd rather have had more score, but never mind.

This relatively early effort is for Disney's last song-free animated feature before the current run of successful animated musicals was started with The Little Mermaid (although Rescuers Down Under was actually released just after The Little Mermaid).
It also marked the first time that Disney made a sequel and this was after around a fifteen year gap.
Frankly, these are fairly dispensable and what we'd all have preferred was more of Broughton's music, but we should be grateful that the album is available once more after having been a top collectible for many years.
