Martin Daguerre was born around 1524 in the Basque town of Hendaye.
In 1559, the new Martin was accused of arson and also of impersonating Martin Guerre; Bertrande remained on his side and he was acquitted in 1560.
The new Martin eloquently argued his case, and the judges in Toulouse tended to believe his version of the story: that Bertrande was pressured to perjury by the greedy Pierre Guerre.

The Return of Martin Guerre relates the true story of Martin Guerre, a sixteenth century French peasant whose identity is stolen by a clever usurper while he is away from home, and the subsequent reclaiming of his identity upon his return.
Martin and Bertrande were married by arrangement at a young age, and their ten-year union was fraught with problems, not the least of these being that Martin was impotent for the first eight years.
By the time he arrives to claim the role of Martin Guerre, du Tilh’s knowledge of the intimate details of Martin’s life, combined with his appearance, acting ability, and Bertrande’s easy acceptance, is enough to convince nearly everyone in the village that the true Martin Guerre has finally returned.

The story for The Return of Martin Guerre remains comparatively true to the source on which the script was based on but it does rely on creative liberties, especially near the end of the film, to keep the romantic theme represented throughout the feature afloat.
Overall, The Return of Martin Guerre successfully bucks the trend of foreign releases being unable to maintain the same level of intensity and enthusiasm crossing the ocean that they had back in Europe and does so with an eloquent flare and style, though subtitles would have been better left out of the final print.

In the second chapter of her book, “The Discontented Peasant,” Davis chronicles the early problems of the Guerre marriage: Martin’s impotence and the social ostracism that resulted from it; Bertrande’s stubborn refusal to leave him, despite the pressure of her family; the authoritarian Sanxi Guerre’s troubled relationship with his son.
The psychological element of her interpretation becomes especially prominent with the assumption by Arnaud du Tilh of Martin Guerre’s identity and Bertrande’s subsequent collaboration (according to Davis) in the imposture.
The strengths of The Return of Martin Guerre—its gripping narrative, vivid characters, and grounding in scrupulous scholarship (Davis writes that she had pored over “every scrap of paper left me by the past”)—make it an accessible and important contribution to our knowledge of rural life in sixteenth-century France.

The Odyssey and The Return of Martin Guerre treat the self in a commonsense way as an entity with objective existence, the inner essence of a person.

The Inventive Peasant Arnaud du Tilh had almost persuaded the learned judges at the Parlement of Toulouse, when on a summer's day in 1560 a man swaggered into the court on a wooden leg, denounced Arnaud, and reestablished his claim to the identity, property, and wife of Martin Guerre.
Told and retold over the centuries, the story of Martin Guerre became a legend, still remembered in the Pyrenean village where the impostor was executed more than 400 years ago.
Deftly written to please both the general public and specialists, The Return of Martin Guerre will interest those who want to know more about ordinary families and especially women of the past, and about the creation of literary legends.
