Paul Simon Rhythm Of The Saints
Rhythm Of The Saints takes on the sounds of south American, more specifically, Brazil.
The Rhythm Of The Saints continues Paul Simon's long standing tradition of incorporating unusual rhythms into his own folksy sound.
This isn't an album that really ought to be partitioned and segmented--each song flows into the others to form a rich tapestry for the listener.

Hirt also played "Saints" frequently during his association with Chris Owens, who uses the song as the climax of the live show she performs nightly at her Bourbon Street club.
Saints fans know it as their own, but the song has had many faces over its lifetime.
"Saints" is steeped in apocalyptic imagery in its more complete versions, with references to the sun refusing to shine and the moon turning blood red, but is most often heard in a stripped-down version that references only the most joyous aspects of the song.

After the joyful, brilliantly played Graceland, any record would be a let down but Rhythm of the Saints, with the help of gifted Brazilian, South African, American and French musicians, has its own distinctive appeal.
Rhythm of the Saints opens with the ecstatic The Obvious Child, propelled by the amazing precussion of Brazil's Grupo Cultural OLODUM, which has the energy of Graceland.
On Rhythm of the Saints, the lyrics meld easily with the spiritual, sensual sense of the music.

In The Rhythm of the Saints, Simon bases his songs on rhythms and sounds found in the drum music of Brazil.
This is most obvious in "The Cool, Cool River," where sudden transitions between pounding textured rhythms and a lone acoustic guitar mirror a move from oppressive work-a-day city life to just drifting down the river, carefree.
Saints' opening track, "The Obvious Child," begins with the loud snare drum chorus, then synthesizer playing octaves; Simon joins in after the instruments have their fun.

As singer/songwriter Frank Tedesso once put it, GRACELAND is the mountaintop and RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS is the mist around the peak.
Though RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS relies on the traditional musical forms of a different part of the world (Brazil), Simon uses a somewhat similar strategy.

SoundStage! Paul Simon - You're the One
Hidden among the fresh sound and drive of the music on these albums was a new lyrical viewpoint -- one which had gradually changed from Simon’s early ‘70s hopeful, artsy stance to become wistful and, even, by The Rhythm Of The Saints, world-weary, angry, and cynical.
In its place, Simon is crafting songs that subtly draw on his world-music experiments, with propulsive and pronounced rhythms and several choruses full of tongue-twisting combinations of sounds and syllables.
Simple truths, yes, but so simple that they are the first ones to be lost in the chaos of life, and, thus, are the ones we most need to be reminded of.

The Rhythm Of The Saints - Paul Simon
Anyone would have trouble following up the excellent, ground-breaking album "Graceland." Although "Rhythm of the Saints" was not as critically acclaimed as its predecessor, it is nevertheless a superb offering from the great American singer/songwriter.
In fact, this album's strength lies in Simon's break from the zydeco-heavy music in "Graceland" to concentrate more on pulsing African drum beats.

The third new studio album of Paul Simon's post-Simon & Garfunkel career was a musical and lyrical change of pace from his first two, Paul Simon and There Goes Rhymin' Simon.
The first album to use this title is one of the most mysterious in Paul Simon's output and almost belongs more with Simon & Garfunkel's discography, given its 1965 recording date.

I also agree with other reviewers--this is one of the fifty best albums of the twentieth century.
You get a broad and deep emotional working out of a variety of African-matrixed South American percussion styles, and the perhaps biggest musical achievement by Simon here is his sly and sophisticated incorporation of a stunning variety of polyrythms into his already legendary folk and folksy pop music.
Complex arrangements and orchestrations synthesizing timbre, rhythm, and genre make this album one of those that EVERY time you listen to it, you hear something new.

 Paul Simon Album Reviews
Ever the pop craftsman, what is atypical about this album is how autobiographical it obviously is in places, in particular the way Simon dissects the failure of his first two marriages.
Appropriating Brazilian percussion patterns instead of South African rhythms, The Rhythm Of The Saints was bound to lack the freshness of Graceland.
Most of the album is of a similar, sometimes samey-sounding mood, and its mellow melodies are carried by Simon’s melodic guitar playing, his plaintive singing, the occasional catchy backing vocal, and (especially) its inventive, highly sophisticated percussion.

You’re the One is certainly a soft-spoken album, like much of his previous work, but there is a certain serenity to it that seems derived from lessons learned and hardships battled.
Two of the songs Simon performed off the new CD, “Old,” and the title track “You’re the One,” were indicative of the general feeling of the album: sagacious and gentle.

This is a great album, although the remastering has not made much of a difference as the sound, in true Paul Simon tradition, was excellent anyway.
Of course, each track is special in itself, but it is as a whole that "The Rhythm Of The Saints" stands out.
Rhythm Of The Saints may not be as immediately appealing as Graceland and may not offer quite as many classics, but it remains a major achievement, a brilliant marriage of Brazilian and Western popular musical styles.

I hadn't got past the first song on this album for the longest time because "Can't Run But" did not appeal to me. I figured that the rest of the album would be dull.
Proof is another charming pop song, particularly noted for its evocative backing vocals and gentle, lilting rhythm whilst Further To Fly and She Moves On are more subdued, melancholy numbers with bubbling and insistent rhythmic patterns.

In my mind, "Rhythm of the Saints" ranks as Paul Simon's very greatest overall album.
There might not be straight-ahead great melodies such as those in "Still Crazy..." and so forth, but I think it was on this recording that the various facets of Simon's songwriting reached their combined pinnacle.
