Outside of a Cat: The Ribbajack
The Ribbajack, by Brian Jacques Download podcast Brian Jacques is best known for the Redwall books, a series of fantasy novels with anthropomorphic beasts of England, mostly mice, otters, rabbits, and the like.
I've come close to reading them a couple of times, since I generally like animal stories, but was reluctant to get pulled into a robust series with dozens of volumes.
Ribbajack is a collection of short storiesby Jacques, not set in Redwall, but mostly in and around his native Liverpool, though the stories are set in different eras.

Like all of Jacques' books, Ribbajack is for children--this edition is listed as being for ages 9 and up on the back cover--but it can still be enjoyedd by adults.
The first is "Ribbajack," is about a naughty little boy who hates everyone and summons a monster to get rid of an enemy.

One such schoolboy causes much mayhem in the book's first (and by far best) story, in which an aspiring scoundrel named Archibald Smifft summons an occult creature, the Ribbajack, to do his evil bidding.
Other stories riff off various other creepy creatures, from werewolves to ghosts to even Medusa, usually with some winking moral woven in by Jacques.
