A Walk Through Time   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The Ridgeway track has always been a public right-of-way, one of the straightest and longest of the maze of footpaths and byways in England and Wales.
The Ridgeway still follows that escarpment to its termination near the north edge of the Vale of Pewsey; its spectacular views, a guide to the early traders, are an inspiration to the modern walker.
The Ridgeway was perfect for this sort of trade, passing over open grasslands with ready grazing, while avoiding the difficulties and tolls of settled lands.

Ramblers Association - Information - Path - Ridgeway
The Ridgeway was originally proposed as a long distance route by the Hobhouse Committee in 1947 and in the 1950s the RA pressed for a route tracing the ancient trackways from Seaton to Cambridge.
Although only the Ridgeway and Peddars Way have National Trail status, the connecting routes are recognised by local authorities, facilitating a continuous 583km/363-mile walk diagonally across southeast England from Lyme Regis on the south coast to Hunstanton on the Wash, sometimes known as the Greater Ridgeway.

Ridgeway Petroleum has been exploring for oil and gas in North America since 1980.
In 1994, a wildcat well in Apache County, Arizona encountered a significant gas accumulation that would change the course of Ridgeway's history and put it on the road to potentially becoming one of the North America's largest producers of carbon dioxide (CO) and helium.
Ridgeway completed testing of its wells in early 1995 and set out to obtain financing to further explore and delineate the Anticline, to improve its understanding of both the structure and potential markets for CO and helium production.

 Ramblers Association - News
The Ridgeway needs £750,000 spending on it to bring it back to an acceptable standard, but the Countryside Agency and the local authorities argued that this could only happen if the trail was protected from further damage from recreational off-roading.
This ban is excellent news for all walkers, horse riders and cyclists who wish to enjoy The Ridgeway in peace, free from the ruts and mud that make the trail extremely hazardous and unpleasant.

On the way it passes through or past the following sites of interest: Barbury Castle, Wayland's Smithy, and Uffington Castle and its White Horse (which unfortunately is not visible from the path, but is very close).
Most of the path is either a Bridleway or a Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT) so will be shared with horse-riders, bikes and motor-bikes.

However, the two guys that I was with and myself could not find the BW at the top of the steep tarmac (there was a private road, is this it?), so we headed back down the hill and west along the B480 and found a BW through Greenfield Wood towards Greenfield.
The only downside to the ride was that an organised Ridgeway ride was taking place in the opposite direction, with seemingly hundreds of riders coming from the opposite direction in the second half of the circuit, but that's trying really hard to find a downside to the ride.
