Topic: The Ring Virus

the ringworld - the ring virus
Apparently there has been some debate as to the Ring vs. The Ring Virus, regarding which is closer to the novel, which was produced first and even whether The Ring Virus is a remake at all.
To address this last point, The Ring Virus is most definitely a remake, with shots replicated from the Japanese film right down to the color of clothes worn by the characters.
Ring Virus also expands Sun-ju and Choe Yol's investigation to include Sun-ju's senior reporter (Yoshino in the Japanese version) as in the novel, thankfully eschewing the disposable Okazaki.

 the ringworld - ring 2
What made the first Ring so terrifying was its mystery, how so little was known of Yamamura Sadako or the videotape she made cursed.
To its credit, Ring 2 does have a few chilling scenes, and is one of those rare sequels that seeks to add more to the original story instead of simply rehashing it.
We know from the first Ring that Sadako was still alive when thrown into the well, but now it looks like she was alive down there for 30 years...

RING is on the computer screen, and a dialogue that says, "7 days..." appears onscreen before the program shuts down and refuses to load again.
A doctor tells her they're infected with a mystery virus, and one of the prisoners she talks to is a woman who had spoken with Robert before he died.
As she explores the area further, she discovers that the monsters encountered in the "real" world are actually people who have been infected with the Ring virus, and that the captives in quarantine are now becoming monsters in the "Loop" world as well.

The Ring Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
In addition, "Ring" inspired the 1999 South Korean-Japanese co-production entitled "The Ring Virus", which was essentially a remake of "Ringu", and was pilfered in the recent William Malone shocker "FearDotCom", which revolved around a 'killer' web site ('you download, you die!').
"The Ring" kicks off with Seattle journalist Rachel Keller (Watts) investigating the sudden and mysterious deaths of her niece Katie (Amber Tamblyn, seen recently on the "Evergreen" episode of UPN's "The Twilight Zone") and three of her friends.
Though "The Ring" essentially retreads material from the 1998 Japanese film, Verbinski skillfully ratchets up the tension gradually as Rachel and Noah's investigation unfolds, while his visual style, which makes good use of gloomy Washington vistas, imparts an atmosphere of imminent doom to the proceedings.

Nakama Yukie is brilliant in her portrayal of Sadako as a young girl frightened of her own power, and is able to draw the audience into her fear as the story moves toward its inevitable conclusion.
Watching Ring Ø is like reading the secret diary of your worst enemy and finding out they're not all that different from you, with fears and frailties of their own.
Make no mistake, though: watching Ring Ø means you'll have to not only purge yourself of the slick, techno-horror influence of Ring and Ring 2, but also love the "slow burn" of classic Agatha Christie mysteries.

Hollywood Gothique: The Ring Virus (2000) - Review
THE RING VIRUS has a few good moments that make it interesting for fans of the franchise (or for cinefiles interested in seeing how the same story is filtered through the lens of a different set of filmmakers), but overall it is a negligible achievement.
As in RING, the lead character is a female reporter Sun-Joo (Eun-Kyung Shin) who investigates the mysterious death of her neice, uncovering a fatal videotape that kills all those who watch it, after seven days.
Curiously, THE RING VIRUS includes a few moments not in the original RING which nevertheless found their way into the American remake: In flashback, we see Eun-Su's mother leaping off a cliff.

Nevertheless, for fans like myself, the announcement that The Ring Two would be directed by Nakata seemed a godsend since he could now have the resources either to make the sequel he had always intended to, or that he could craft a completely new entry into the Ring series.
Unfortunately, The Ring Two is not a remake of an adaptation, or a remake of Nakata’s sequel, but a sequel of Verbinski’s remake.
The Ring Two also borrows explicitly from Hollywood genre conventions by casting Sissy Spacek as Samara’s disturbed mother in a reversal of her role in Brian DePalma’s classic Carrie.
