Koslow is the riverkeeper for the South River, the first in its history, and one of his jobs is keeping sediment from clouding the water and killing underwater grasses.
The first riverkeepers were fishermen along the Hudson River who created an organization called the Hudson River Fisherman's Association to speak out for their endangered river back in 1966.
Riverkeepers usually come to their jobs with a background in law or science and a love for the water.

 Riverkeepers keep an eye on Willamette’s health - April 21, 2006
May rows this stretch of the river at least once a month in her volunteer job as a river guardian for Willamette Riverkeeper, a nonprofit organization devoted to the well-being of the waterway.
Willamette Riverkeeper volunteers have been observing the river in the Eugene area for years, adopting sections of it to monitor for excessive erosion, new clearings, illegal dumping, sewer overflows and other problems.
Riverkeeper started a water quality monitoring program in 2003, selecting monitoring sites in conjunction with the state Department of Environmental Quality so it wouldn’t duplicate work already being done by government agencies, said Travis Williams, executive director of the Portland-based organization.

In January 2004, Riverkeeper initiated a citizen suit against two of the world’s largest oil companies for the largest urban oil spill—right in the heart of New York City.
In May 2004, Riverkeeper filed the lawsuit itself against ExxonMobil for violation of the Clean Water Act and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and NYC Councilmembers David Yassky and Eric Gioia have joined the case as co-plaintiffs.
Riverkeeper's aim is to accelerate spill remediation, ensure that the aquifer and its soils are restored, prevent oil from entering Newtown Creek, and to protect the health and welfare of New Yorkers.

 Riverkeepers sues NYC over septic tanks
He said the city was "apparently frightened of being sued by developers" if it did not ease the rule to allow septic tanks on steeper ground.
Along with Riverkeeper, the coalition included the National Resources Defense Council, Friends of the Great Swamp, "concerned residents" of the Putnam County communities of Kent, Carmel, Southeast and Mahopac, and several other groups.
Putnam County is home to several of the reservoirs that supply the metropolitan region's drinking water.

Kennedy, who is chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeepers, a conservation organization, said that his nearly two decades in environmental law have convinced him that ordinary Americans have the power to defeat "nameless corporate enteritis" in ecological litigation.
Most of Kennedy's time has been spent with the Riverkeepers, an organization founded in the late 1960s to protect the Hudson River and its fish population from chemical pollution.
The group went on to win other court battles against corporations in the valley and was instrumental in lobbying for the passage of the nation's first large-scale environmental accountability law in 1969.
