Roman Catholic sex abuse cases - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the late 20th century, and early 21st, the Roman Catholic Church was confronted with a series of allegations of sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests (who are all male) and by members of the various religious orders (both male and female).
The Roman Catholic Church considers the sexual abuse of children to be mortally sinful: covering up abuse is hiding both a breach of secular law and what in the eyes of the Church is mortal sin.
Canon law (internal church law) was often given priority over secular criminal law, an action which led some Catholic Church leaders to be accused of "perverting the course of justice", itself a criminal act.

Senior church leaders, including the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Law (USA) and Bishop Brendan Comiskey of Ferns (Ireland) were forced to resign over their mishandling of cases in their dioceses and in particular their failure to report incidents to police.
The response of the Roman Catholic Church to sex abuse by its priests in the twentieth century involved numerous methods to avoid criminal prosecution of the priests.
From a criminal law viewpoint, the single worst failure of the Roman Catholic Church was the widespread failure of those in authority, once alerted as to the behaviour of individual sex abusers and paedophiles under their authority, to report the incidents directly to the police in their state.

It is time for the institutional church to challenge its fundamentalist interpretation of Sacred Scripture and develop a more cogent theology – one which largely focuses on Christ’s teachings and the call of the Gospel to create a more inclusive community family of faith.
The nature of the role by the majority of the members of a religious institution in the community at large provides a much wider scope for contact with broad sections of the community in virtually all possible situations.

Unfortunately for the Church, he explains, "bishops deferred to mental-health people whose knowledge about pedophilia was wrong" by modern standards.
