It is a real baseball movie in the vein of "Bull Durham" which next to "Bang The Drum Slowly" is one of the best sports films ever made.
"The Rookie" is not nearly as good as those films, but adequately and cleanly captures the feeling of the game, the smells, the sounds, the hard work, and some of the magic.

"The Rookie" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
I am a huge baseball fan who works at a movie theather and when i first viewed the trailer for this movie i knew this would be a great movie for any family.
The Rookie indeed hits a "home run" (or perhaps pitches a "no hitter" since Dennis Quaid realizes his dream of taking the mound in a major league ballpark.) Even my wife, no sportsfan she, was enthralled and wiped away more than one tear during some of the marvelous emotionally captivating scenes--on and off the ballfield.
It was nice to see a movie with responsible adults in charge, typical silly teens showing their emerging adulthood by sincerely challenging Jim to reach for his dreams and then supporting him, and a marriage / family that is not perfect but real and loving.

Far from a perfect movie, The Rookie nevertheless feels like an old friend or even baseball itself: sort of boring, sort of stately, yet possessed of an ineffable poetry in its peaks that speaks to the young heart of old men and their sons.
It's a new old movie in the best sense of the word, a vintage clunker that breaks down a lot, but man, is it sweet when it purrs.

 CNN.com - Reviews: Tarantino films, 'The Rookie' - August 20, 2002
Fittingly for a movie that drew from so much movie-nerd knowledge, the new edition packs in plenty of pop-culture study aids, including footage from the 1994 Cannes film festival, an all-Tarantino edition of ''Siskel & Ebert,'' and just about every ''Pulp'' piece ever written.
The only thing missing is Tarantino himself; though he appears on a new making-of documentary, the famously motor-mouthed helmer doesn't provide a sorely needed commentary track (though he pops up sporadically on a so-so ''Reservoir Dogs'' cast-and-crew track).
As a result, the special edition is just as ephemera-packed, with plenty of on-set footage, TV specials, and deleted scenes (the movie itself remains an enjoyable diversion, buoyed by Robert Forster's somber turn as an aging bail bondsman).

SPLICEDwire | Dennis Quaid & Jim Morris interview for "The Rookie" (2002)
At a San Francisco screening of "The Rookie" a couple weeks ago Dennis Quaid helped introduce the film, in which he stars as an aging Texas schoolteacher who becomes a Major League Baseball player, by saying if it wasn't a true story, he wouldn't have even finished reading the script.
His performance earned him a spot on their farm team that soon led to his major league debut -- where he struck out the Rangers' Royce Clayton in front of a cheering crowd of 40,000 (including half the population of his small town) at the ballpark in Arlington, Texas.
Morris noted that Quaid's lack of physical resemblance to him (and the fact that he's 10 years older) was one of the few things fictionalized in the movie, which might strike many viewers as a sports fairy tale without that "based on a true story" title card.
