Topic: The Roots of Coincidence

Coincidence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Coincidence is the noteworthy alignment of two or more events or circumstances without obvious causal connection.
A coincidence does not prove a relationship, but related events may be expected to have a higher index of coincidence.
In optics, coincidence is also used to refer to two or more incident beams of light that strike the same point at the same time.

The coincidences listed on the sub site can be divided into two primary categories, the first, such as literary coincidences are those which tend to suggest the Human ability to foretell future events.
The second category such as the Lincoln-Kennedy scenario tend to suggest that perhaps all Human endeavors and actions are all part of a bizarre video game in which Humans are mere characters, the underlying sequences of events remains unchanged, the outcome changes slightly dependant upon the actions and interactions of the players.
That in itself would have been coincidence enough but in fact it was merely the beginning of an extraordinary chain of events.

Coincidence, synchronicity, and paranormal events of varying types have and are lumped together with dismissive shrugs by many, but not all, learned people in a host of disciplines.
That Arthur Koestler turned his keen intellect on these topics is not as surprising as some of the postulates he made, many of which stand still as neither disproved or confirmed.
Koestler makes the point repeatedly that coincidence, synchronicity, and parapsychology cannot necessarily be bottled up or tapped on demand, but that sometimes precipitating events will trigger such events.

The Roots of Coincidence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Roots of Coincidence, written by Arthur Koestler, is an accessible introduction to theories of parapsychology, including extra-sensory perception and psychokinesis.
It is influenced by Carl Jung's concept of synchronicity.
"The Roots of Coincidence" is also the name of a song by Pat Metheny Group, on their 1997 album Imaginary Day.

Synchronicity is a word coined by the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung to describe the "temporally coincident occurrences of acausal events." Jung spoke of synchronicity as an "acausal connecting principle" (i.e.
It differs from coincidence in that synchronicity implies not just a happenstance, but an underlying pattern or dynamic that is being expressed through meaningful relationships or events.
Jung believed that many experiences perceived as coincidence were due not merely to chance, but instead, suggested the manifestation of parallel events or circumstances reflecting this governing dynamic.

Throughout the first part of the recording the listener is invited on a trip led by the Group and is rarely diverted with the exception of the too radio friendly “Follow Me” which in its second track placement certainly risks derailing the listener.
While I have avoided commenting on tracks individually and have intended to focus on a few unique aspects and sounds of the recording and the 'journey', I think it's important to note that “The Roots of Coincidence” seems to be another Metheny anthem.
Although my notes from the Group publicist tell me the song immediately following “The Roots of Coincidence”, “Too Soon Tomorrow”, was written while the Group was making the record, it does sound like the arrangement and theme may have been recollected from the Letter From Home period.

On these pages you will read about some of the weird coincidences associated with the Titanic and also about the strange story of how Edgar Allen Poe 'foresaw' how a member of my family would be eaten by his shipmates!
Also included here are a few of the stories sent to me about Doppelgangers - the human double.

It's basically a pickup that allows any guitar to emulate any combination of guitar sounds, amps, rooms, etc. You can hear the VG-8 on the lushly arranged "Follow Me" and "The Roots of Coincidence," where it takes on an almost thrash-metal sound.
One of the many highlights on the CD (and Metheny's favorite) is "The Roots of Coincidence." This song rocks unusually hard for a Pat Metheny tune.
The VG-8 is used extensively on the cut to achieve various effects, and the results are nothing short of spellbinding.

"The Roots Of Coincidence" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. On IMAGINARY DAY the Pat Metheny Group is joined by percussionists Mino Cinelu, David Samuels, Glen Velez, and Don Alias, along with vocalist/trumpeter Mark Ledford and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist David Blamires.
The 9 song titles suggest a programmatic journey, from the title cut through "Into the Dream" to "Across the Sky" and "The Awakening." The tunes include exotic Arabic flavorings along with the Brazilian and Western sounds that the band has been using for some time.
"The Heat of the Day" features some especially inspired ensemble work, with Glen Velez playing an exotic percussion instrument known as the "riq." "The Roots of Coincidence" transforms a Steve Reich-like background figure into, alternately, an 80's Brit-rock beat, a hip-hop groove and an extended fusion guitar jam.

 Pat Metheny Group-Imaginary Day (DVD-Audio) (1997)
Imaginary Day is probably one of their more adventurous and complex albums to date, leading into complex sonic landscapes and fusing multiple influences including world music, heavy rock (The Roots of Coincidence) and even pop sounding tunes (Follow Me).
Strangely enough, the result is very listenable, and I think it represents a tour de force for the band.
It won two Grammies when it was released in 1997: Best Contemporary Jazz Performance and Best Rock Instrumental Performance (!) for The Roots of Coincidence.
