Christianity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most Christians believe in the General Resurrection, in which all people who have ever lived will rise from the dead at the end of time, to be judged by Christ when He returns to fulfill the rest of Messianic prophecy.
Christian views of the afterlife generally involve heaven and hell.
Catholicism includes with these the transitory realm of purgatory whose denizens, dying in a state of sin but nonetheless assured of salvation, reside for a period of time to undergo purification before entering into heaven.

Aristotle -- Metaphysics [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The heavens enclose an organized body which has a size, a shape, and a hierarchical structure all of which it maintains by ceaseless, concerted activity.
Moderns, for whom the spherical motion of the heavens no longer indicates that the heavens have boundaries, draw the same conclusion from the fact that there is darkness.
Because it is deathless and because the heavens and nature and all that is depend upon it, Aristotle calls this activity God.

 The Roots of Purgatory
All Christians agree that we won’t be sinning in heaven.
Therefore, between the sinfulness of this life and the glories of heaven, we must be made pure.
Thus, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

It is one of the peculiarities of great literature, that having created it, the author sometimes loses control of it.
Our needs--for justice, for freedom and dignity--are roots of heaven that are deeply imbedded in
The ferocity with which Morel clings to this sentiment and the absurd grandeur of his fight make him one of the more unforgettable heroes in all of literature and one whom it's odd to find in a French novel.

Naturally, Cary was less than thrilled with this remark and riposted with several remarks of his own that were probably less than well thought out.
Probably because "Roots," is about people searching for something-if the title hadn't been retired with Robert Ruark's novel and film, also about African themes-Something of Value.
