Heliogabalus was the son of Sextus Varius Marcellus and Julia Soaemias Bassiana, niece of Julia Domna (the wife of Septimius Severus).
Heliogabalus was serving as hereditary high priest of the deity when his mother and grandmother used him as a figurehead against Macrinus, who had succeeded Caracalla.

Elagabalus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias were murdered (according to the Historia Augusta, in the Emperor's latrine) on March 11, 222; their bodies were dragged through the streets of Rome and the Cloaca Maxima, and ultimately thrown into the Tiber.
The most famous among these, immortalized in the 19th century painting The Roses of Heliogabalus, is that he smothered guests at a dinner to death with a mass of sweet-smelling rose petals dropped from above.

 Just Roses
Roses were grown at Ely Place during the reign of Elizabeth I. Ely Place was the London residence of the Bishops of Ely; Queen Elizabeth let the gatehouse to Sir Christopher Hatton for the rent not of a peppercorn but a single red rose.
Venus presented the rose to her son Cupid, who, in turn, gave it to Harpocrates, the god of silence, to induce him to conceal the weaknesses of the gods.
In heraldry the rose is used as the mark of cadency for a seventh son.

Classic Tile Murals - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema - The Roses of Heliogabalus
He attempted unsuccessfully to introduce the cult of the oriental sun-god of Emesa to Rome, and was notorious for his oriental-style court and its extravagant banquets at which the menu might include the brains of 600 ostriches, powdered glass or camel dung, such was the Emperor's perverted sense of humor.
Among his celebrated practical jokes was the releasing of a canopy over his guests, suffocating them beneath tons of rose petals, which Alma-Tadema depicts with the debauched emperor and his world-weary companions gazing at the scene in detached amusement.
In order to paint the roses precisely during the winter, he had them sent from the French Riviera, and for months afterwards Alma-Tadema's studio floor was littered with rose petals.

Note that the name Heliogabalus is in fact a confusion with of the original Semitic name with the Greek word helios (sun), an understandable mistake given the emperor's religious title.
Heliogabalus is best known for the acts of debauchery and often amusing eccentricity that were supposed to have characterised his regime.
Due to theses stories, Heliogabalus became something of a hero to the Decadent movement in the late nineteenth century.

 Roses in History
The rose has been associated with man for ages, but it isn't until the mid-1800's that hybridization of the rose into modern, reblooming (remontant) forms really accelerated.
Once European growers obtained specimens of China roses during the last years of the 18th century, it took several years before they were able to successfully hybridize the European roses with the China.
Roses were so important to Romans that they created a feast called Rosalia to celebrate the rose, which occurs on the 23rd of May.

He ascended the throne in AD 218 and, according to Gibbon, 'abandoned himself to the grossest pleasures with ungoverned fury.' He attempted to introduce the cult of the oriental sun god of Emesa to Rome and ran an oriental style court.
One of his whims was to have a feast in which his entire court were smothered in a cascade of roses.

This painting was inspired by Heliogabalus (or Elagabalus) a Roman emperor of the 3rd century.
Most decadent of all the emperors (seen in copper silk), legend has it that he once staged an orgy in which the participants were smothered to death in a cascade of rose petals.
Alma-Tadema had fresh roses brought in from France every week so that every one of the (more than 2,000) petals could be accurately depicted.

The ancient Egyptians and ancient Greeks knew about the golden ratio, regarded as an aesthetically pleasing ratio, and incorporated it into the design of monuments including the Great Pyramid, the Parthenon, the Colosseum.
The golden ratio is used in the design and layout of paintings such as The Roses of Heliogabalus.
Recent studies show that the golden ratio also plays a role in the human perception of beauty in body shapes and faces.

In this respect he joins such early twentieth century masters of fantasy as Lord Dunsany, E.R. Eddison, and J.R.R. Tolkien in his polymath literary tendencies; but unlike these goldsmiths of prose, his best work was wrought in verse.
There was no direct relationship between Smith's poem and Alma-Tadema's masterpiece, but both works were inspired by the same historical figure, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antonius (better known as Elagabalus or Heliogabalus).
Where the Dutch-English master has transformed the somewhat macabre incident (in the Roman account the Emperor actually suffocates his guests in a shower of rose petals) into one of playful luxury, Smith's poem celebrates the Emperor's decadent personality in the tradition of Baudelaire.
