The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP or Mounties; French, Gendarmerie royale du Canada, GRC) is both the federal police force and the national police of Canada.
In 1903 jurisdiction was extended to the Arctic coast, and in 1912 to northern Manitoba.
On February 1, 1920 the RNWMP was merged with the Dominion Police and was renamed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, with responsibility for federal law enforcement in all provinces and territories.

Infantry travelling by horse and fighting on foot are instead known as mounted infantry or dragoons.
These forces found new success in Imperial operations (irregular warfare), where modern weapons were lacking and the slow moving infantry-artillery train or fixed fortifications were often ineffective against native insurgents (unless the natives offered a fight on an equal footing, as at Tel-el-Kebir, Omdurman, etc).
In the Canadian Army a number of both regular and reserve units have cavalry roots.
