The Royal Scots Fusiliers, the 21st Foot, were raised in 1678 by the 5th Earl of Mar in response to internal instability in Scotland.
Mar’s Regiment quickly gained the distinction of becoming a Fusilier Regiment and by 1695 was officially known as the Scots Fusiliers.
The distinction of Fusilier deriving from those elite troops armed with the new flintlock musket known as a ’Fusil’.

The Fusiliers were again in action at the battle of Dettingen in 1743 under the command of Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw, probably the most memorable and best loved figure in the regiment's history.
In 1877 the regiment was given royal authority to assume the name of the 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers, and in 1881 became the 1st and 2nd Battalions Royal Scots Fusiliers.
The regiment was presented with the Freedom of the Royal Burgh of Ayr in June 1945, and has the right to march through the town with drums beating, bayonets fixed and Colours flying.

The Scots Guards were raised in 1639 by the Duke of Argyle, to support the Monarch, but they date their formation date in 1642 to support by Charles I. The regiment was disbanded for nine years in 1651, but it was reformed in 1660 upon the restoration of the Monarchy.
Therefore, the Scots Guards, predate the first two regiments of Foot Guards, but were not (re) established as the Scots Guards, until 1651, and thus were preempted by the Grenadier and the Coldstream Guards, in seniority.
Each of the Scottish Regiments as well as the Scots Guards have a history of tunes that are particular to their regiment, as well as common and shared tunes There will be a great deal of pressure on the Pipe Major to retain the individual regiment tunes and incorporate them into the new regiment.

The Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret's Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment) was a regular Scottish infantry regiment of the British Army, part of the Scottish Division, and known (for short) as 'The RHF'.
The Regiment's 'achievements' as born on the colours and on the drums are: The Royal Cypher and The White Horse of Hanover, St Andrew, The Castle and Key of Gibraltar and the Assaye Elephant.

Returning to Scotland in 1714, it was opposed at Sheriffmuir by the Jacobite army commanded by the son of the first colonel, and agian fought on its native soil at Culloden.
The Volunteer battalions are the 1st and 2nd Ayrshire, raised in 1859, with red uniform and blue facings; and the 3rd Galloway, with grey and scarlet.

2nd RSF, as part of the 1st Army, attacked Festubert on 16th May. James Gilmour was the victim of an exploding shell which killed six and injured twenty.
William Taylor, son of Thomas and Jane Taylor of Sunnyside Cottage, Stair, Tarbolton, was born in Kilwinning and died of wounds in Turkey.
Private Craig was probably killed in an attack mounted by 4th RSF to divert the attention of the Turks from the the evacuation of the Suvla Bay and Anzac Cove sectors.

I am desperately seeking {& have been for the past 40 odd years} a photograph of,or that includes;3129401;Fusilier Reg Sills 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers;of Grays,Essex;who served throughout the Burma Campaign,with the 1st Battalion the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Hopefully someone out there may have served with him & remembers him,he was awarded the MM for gallantry in rescuing a wounded Comrade,under heavy fire, during a Patrol in February 1945,when A Company came under attack by HMG,LMG & rifle fire,on rounding a corner in the road.
Reg Sills was the only man of the 1st RSF to be honoured with the Bar to the MM in WW2.

It was a tough journey but they tell me that the Scots Fusiliers, were magnificent.
