The Rubettes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rubettes were an English pop band of the 1970s assembled in 1973 by the songwriting team of Wayne Bickerton, the then head of AandR at Polydor Records, and his co-songwriter, Tony Waddington, after their doo-wop and 1950s American pop-influenced songs had been rejected by a number of existing acts.
The Rubettes’ first (and biggest) hit was “Sugar Baby Love” (released in 1974) which was a UK number one, going on to sell around three million copies worldwide.
The Rubettes' song "Sugar Baby Love" was also covered as the theme song for the Japanese children's anime Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar.

The fact of appreciating Rubettes is not due to a sudden revelation.
Rubettes were thus the only true foreign group which I knew, and their albums with acoustics country allowed me a transition carefully from my period original music of the movie towards the pop rock'n'roll.
I was thus interested in Rubettes relatively late and the reconquest of the albums which my brother had acquired during several years required of me long errance in the secondhand trades and other record dealers.

 Story1
This wasn't unusual in the early 70's as many, who will remain anonymous, were actually just a front for studio creations by producers and writers, and never actually played on any of their hits.
The Rubettes however were different in this respect as they had already recorded three hits before forming as a band without even realising it, and who you saw on television, in magazines and on the record sleeves were the real thing, not just a pretty face, miming.
The Rubettes had been well and truly formed, with the single being released in January 1974.

 The Rubettes
The Rubettes first made No.1 in 1974 with their very first single 'Sugar Baby Love' and after five weeks at the coveted No.1 spot in the U.K. they repeated their success throughout the world.
Throughout the 70's their huge popularity determined that they were constantly in demand for TV and Concert appearances worldwide, and after completing their 8th and last album for Polydor Records in 1979 they continued to record for C.B.S. Records and Carrere Records.
With three of the original members of the Rubettes still in attendance, namely Alan Williams - Lead Vocals/Guitar, Mick Clarke - Bass and John Richardson - Drums plus Mark Haley on Keyboards, the Rubettes are as popular as ever.

 Alan Williams
In da Vinci's absence The Rubettes dropped the falsetto lead that had dominated the first two singles and went for a straightforward rock and roll sound on 'Juke Box Jive', 'I Can Do It' and 'Foe-Dee-O-Dee'.
Thereafter things got more difficult, which was unfortunate for The Rubettes because this was when they started writing their own singles.
The Rubettes are still going and are still led by Alan Williams, though his closest collaborator John Richardson has moved away into new age-tinged music influenced by Krishna Consciousness.

The disc may run a little long for some tastes -- after all, they were little more than a pop phenomenon without great lesser singles or album tracks -- but it's still the best Rubettes collection assembled in the CD era.
