The stock of the Samuel Goldwyn Company, the cash-strapped film studio that has considered putting itself up for sale, rose nearly 13 percent yesterday after Daily Variety, the Hollywood trade publication, reported that Polygram N.V. and MCA Inc. were considering a buyout of Goldwyn.
Polygram, which is controlled by the Dutch electronics concern Philips N.V., and MCA, a unit of the Seagram Company, are joint owners of Gramercy Pictures.
Goldwyn said last week that it had retained Furman Selz Inc. to advise it.

The Samuel Goldwyn Company has hired October Films co-founder Jeff Lipsky and his Plainview Pictures, Inc. to create a marketing and theatrical distribution operation for the distributor, as part of a company revitalization.
Speaking about the company's plans, Lipsky said that "there is going to be a mix of acquisitions (and) production," with the release slate being a mix of mostly English language films, and a small percentage of foreign language film.

Son of legendary independent Hollywood producer Samuel Goldwyn and a respected independent producer-distributor in his own right, Goldwyn began his career in England with the J. Arthur Rank Organization as a writer and associate producer after WWII.
In 1961 he made his directorial debut with the college youth film, "The Young Lovers" (1964) and during the 1970s produced the Chester Himes caper films, "Cotton Comes to Harlem" (1970) and "Come Back, Charleston Blue" (1972).
