The Sealed Knot (reenactment) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sealed Knot is a British historical association dedicated to costumed reenactment of battles and events surrounding the English Civil War.
It takes its name from the original Sealed Knot, a secret association aimed at the restoration of the monarchy, although the modern incarnation states that it has none of the political affiliations of its namesake.
With its large membership and high profile the Sealed Knot is the largest, most well known of all the many re-enactment and historical groups and societies in the UK.

Kowald, whose experience went back the strum und drang noise-making of Machine Gun and other free jazz explosions, was the musical antithesis of percussionist Burkhard Beins, one-third of the band Sealed Knot with cellist Mark Wastell and harpist Rhodri Davies on Surface/Plane.
As electronic preparations create static undertones throughout, aviary shrills and doorstop reverberations lead to what could be the ghostly sounds of a heavenly choir that morphs into a sharp cymbal scratch and one final string pluck.
Developing improvisations with output several decibels lower than on the other disc is the challenge Sealed Knot face and overcome.

Killer lineup, I thought, thinking of Beins’ extraordinary work with Andrea Neumann and Keith Rowe, among others, and of Wastell’s and Davies’ work with Chris Burn and Simon H. Fell (in the IST trio).
But what really got me was Wastell’s comment “Burkhard doesn’t strike the drums at all [in this trio], he just rubs them.” That aesthetic more or less characterizes the group as a whole, called the Sealed Knot (I wonder if the reference to the 17th century British loyalists of the same name was intentional).
Overall, this is a marvelous, subtle recording which will lure you in and beguile with its multiple angles, turns, and perspectives.

The Sealed Knot, a trio featuring percussionist Burkhard Beins, harpist Rhodri Davies, and violoncellist Mark Wastell, are the musical equivalent of a talented vegan chef who can make gluten taste like virtually anything.
In the often austere and restrained world of spontaneous composition, where artists eschew the conventions of performance, the Sealed Knot's labelmate Le Quan Ninh radiates a luminous charisma through that most opaque of improvisational recordings, the solo percussion disc.
He begins by building delicate edifices out of a pyrotechnic array of clatters, skitters, and squeals, and then proceeds to knock them down with gusto in a closing set of three big, sweeping pieces that move with the speedy single-mindedness of a tornado moving across the prairie with deadly grace.
