Joseph Haydn - LearnThis.Info Enclyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Haydn was born in 1732, the son of a wheelwright living in the village of Rohrau near the border with Hungary.
Haydn was a devout Catholic, who often turned to his rosary when he got stuck in composing, a practice that he usually found to be effective.
Haydn is credited as the "father" of the classical symphony and string quartet, and also wrote many piano sonatas, piano trios, divertimentos and masses, which became the foundation for the Classical style in these compositional types.

The Seasons (Haydn) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haydn was led to write The Seasons by the great success of his previous oratorio The Creation (1798), which had become very popular and was in the course of being performed all over Europe.
The composition process was arduous for Haydn, in part because his health was gradually failing (soon after the premiere, he became too weak to compose) and partly because Haydn found van Swieten's libretto to be rather taxing.
Haydn remarked that while he had been industrious his whole life long, this was the first occasion he had ever been asked to write a chorus in praise of industry.

Franz Josef Haydn biography - 8notes.com
Franz Joseph Haydn, (March 31, 1732 – May 31, 1809) was a leading composer of the Classical period, called the 'Father of the Symphony' and 'Father of the String Quartet'.
Haydn was hugely impressed with Mozart's work; it has been noted by Mozart scholars that after this time Haydn largely ceased to compose operas and concertos andndash: two of the genres where Mozart was at his strongest.
Haydn's compositional practice was rooted in a study of the modal counterpoint of Fux, and the tonal homophonic styles which had become more and more popular, particularly the work of Gluck and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, of the later Haydn wrote 'without him, we know nothing'.

Haydn's Harmoniemesse marks the end of a great career; the composer was seventy when he finished it.
One of the few obligations that remained after Haydn's return from his last London visit in 1795 was to compose a Mass every summer for the name-day (September 8) of the Princess Maria Hermenegilde.
The name was first used--or at least, first written down--decades after Haydn's death by a librarian working at Eisenstadt; he may have learned it from the older players in the ensemble, who could have taken part in the premiere.

It was for this reason that they accepted a proposal from their relative Johann Matthias Franck, the schoolmaster and choirmaster in Hainburg, that Haydn should be taken into Franck's home and be trained as a musician.
There is reason to think that Haydn's singing impressed those who heard him, because two years later (1740), he was brought to the attention of Georg von Reutter, the director of music in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, who was touring the provinces looking for talented choirboys.
A central characteristic of Haydn's music is the development of larger structures out of very short, simple musical motifs.

 SoundStage! Haydn - The Seasons
By the time Haydn wrote his two late oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons, he was an international success.
Though Haydn had worked quite successfully with small ensembles during his tenure for Count Esterházy, he was now afforded the luxury of huge performing ensembles.
René Jacobs conducts half that number, but they are virtuoso to the man and woman, each one contributing to the ensemble and many doing not only that, but shining in solo passages as well.

Joseph Haydn is one of the most neglected composers of the classical era of music, despite his mentorship to fellow composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
Haydn suffered from chronic, recurrent nasal polyps that spanned over three decades.
Haydn's persistent polyposis led to four operations where ligature of the polyps, extraction, and excision were among the techniques practiced.

 Notherby's :: Haydn: The Seasons
In four parts, each musically depicting a season, it offers plentiful opportunities for all the participants to shine and conductor Jacobs, his splendid orchestra and chorus, and three outstanding soloists deliver a committed performance that's a delight from the first note to the last.
Jacobs is known for his gutsy interpretations and this set is no exception; tempos are lively, the few passages of second-drawer Haydn (still preferable to most composer's top-drawer stuff) retain interest, and the period orchestra delivers crisp, lively playing.
Haydn's genius transforms many genre scenes: a summer storm, hunting episodes, daybreak, the gloomy winter fog, peasant dances, and imitations of nature, like frog croaks that will bring a smile to your face.

Haydn: The Seasons: Petersen/ Gura/ Henschel/ RIAS Chamber Choir/ Freiburg Baroque Orch/ Jacobs
It is astonishing that Haydn, at the end of his career, could write with such youthful exuberance in his culminating masterpiece, The Seasons.
This period performance under René Jacobs brings out the joy of this piece, based on James Thomson's poem: he nudges the music persuasively when Haydn has fun with the lowing of cattle, the cry of the quail and the chirping of the cricket.

 7. "The Creation" And "The Seasons" Page 1
Haydn rounded his life with "The Creation" and "The Seasons." They were the summit of his achievement, as little to be expected from him, considering his years, as "Falstaff" was to be expected from the octogenarian Verdi.
The connection thus established between the names of Handel and Haydn is interesting, for there can be little question that Haydn was led to think of writing a large choral work chiefly as the result of frequently hearing Handel's oratorios during his visits to the metropolis.
That this was the libretto used by Haydn is certain, and we may therefore accept it as a fact that Haydn's most notable achievement in choral music was due in great measure to the man who had brought him to London, and had drawn from him the finest of his instrumental works.

Haydn's 'oratorio' (or whatever) The Seasons received its first performance in 1801, the 70th year of the composer's life.
Where The Seasons follows on from The Creation is in showing signs of a 19th century romantic idiom, something I don't find in Haydn's quartets and symphonies, although there may be touches of it in his piano sonatas, and something I don't really detect in Beethoven either.

Infectious rhythms bring out the fun of The Seasons from the start, and when in Simon’s first aria Haydn quotes from the slow movement of the Surprise Symphony, Jacobs nudges the music persuasively.
The new release highlights the bold writing for brass and timpani in the choruses; the timbre of the Freiburgers’ valveless horns is very distinctive, notably in the drinking chorus at the end of ‘Autumn’, where Haydn introduces triangle and tambourine for good measure.
The storm chorus in ‘Summer’ rivals Beethoven’s storm in the Pastoral, and the crescendo as the sun rises is thrilling.

This new recording of "The Seasons" seems to be getting a lot of good press and while it is certainly worth all the praise, it doesn't - in my view - represent such a bold step forward compared to, say the Gardiner from 1992 (Archiv), to be treated as a complete novelty.

Now it is probable that none of the others present is in a position to challenge this (which no doubt is the intention) since they may not be familiar with Elgar's lesser known oratorio.
The Seasons, on the other hand, is a cyclically seasonal tale of simple country folk, a sort of Lower Austrian Archers.
In the aria, Haydn has Hanne responding to the symbolic optimism of Summer in a way that is, at the same time, both spiritual and sensually earthy.

Written near the end of his life, "The Seasons" took two years of disciplined work, and the freshness he imbued gives it a fresh quality that makes it one of the most popular oratorios even to this day.
