The Secret Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Secret Service is the title of a British children's SpyFi series that was produced by Gerry Anderson and Lord Lew Grade's Century 21 Productions company for ITC Entertainment in 1969 and broadcast on ITV networks in the United Kingdom.
The Secret Service broke the pattern of most of the Supermarionation series that preceded it by being set in the present day (most of Anderson's other shows of the 1960s were set in the near or far future).
Ultimately, The Secret Service would be Anderson's last full-scale puppet series until the 1980s; for the next decade, he would work almost exclusively on live action productions such as Space: 1999 and The Protectors.

Supermarionation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Supermarionation (standing for super marionette animation) is a puppetry technique devised by the British production company AP Films and used extensively in its numerous children's action-adventure series, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Thunderbirds.
Secret Service was actually a hybrid of live-action and Supermarionation, using footage of live actors from a distance to depict driving, walking, etc. Production was cancelled by ITC owner Lew Grade before the pilot episode aired; the 13 completed episodes aired sporadically on ATV and other British broadcasters beginning in 1969.
A recent US television advertisement for the Orbitz online travel service is styled to suggest supermarionation, though whether it could correctly be called by the term is open to question.

In The Secret Service, the last of Anderson's Supermarionation series, Anderson gives us yet another hush-hush secret espionage branch of the British government, this time code-named BISHOP: the British Intelligence Secret Headquarter Operation Priest.
BISHOP is the brainchild of Father Stanley Unwin, a village priest who came up with a marvelous machine he has dubbed the "minimizer" that allows him to shrink anything or anyone to pint-size.
The Secret Service is a curio at best — not as creative as Anderson's other series, but still a hoot in its own right.

This is the basic premise of The Secret Service, the Anderson's 7th Supermarionation television series.
The Secret Service attempted to 'trump' Captain Scarlet and Joe 90 by freely mixing live shots with standard Supermarionation puppet and model shots.
Like Supercar, The Secret Service took place in the 'present' day of 1969, thus, live action surroundings and vehicles could be used without much difficulty.

The Secret Service, Gerry Anderson's final Supermarionation series, sounds so odd that it might put off fans, but that would be a pity.
This 13 episode series combines numerous Anderson trademarks, with both Supermarionation and live action, in a daring and delightful show.
'The Secret Service' was a transition for Gerry Anderson, going from "supermarionation" ala 'Thunderbirds', 'Captain Scarlet', et al, to live action like 'UFO' and 'Space:1999'.

The Unorthodox Shepherd paved the way for The Secret Service, both in its plot-line of a man of the cloth who is not all he seems to be, and its use of location footage inserted into the studio-shot interior sequences.
On The Secret Service, a second unit headed by director Ken Turner was responsible for finding the buildings and houses that would appear in location footage, and also the sections of country road along which the vehicles (mostly Gabriel, Father Unwin's Model T Ford) would be seen travelling.
Sadly, after 13 episodes, The Secret Service was cancelled and this spelled the end for Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation as he moved forward with live-action productions such as UFO and The Protectors.

Factor in Matthew Harding as the faithful operator, a shrinking ray, and the good father's odd eccentricities: talking in an offbeat language called "Unwinese," driving a 1919 flivver, and you've got the makings of a quirky Anderson classic.
As a fitting finale to Anderson's Supermarionation series, The Secret Service is last but not least.
This series, the last of the 'supermarionation' process after 'Captain Scarlet' and 'Joe 90', is definitely recommended for fans of the genre, young and old alike.

The story involves a team of Father Unwin and secret agent Matthew Harding, who the holy man shrinks with a secret shrinking ray to go on missions for the government!
The shrinking angle here never works, partly because it does not make sense why Matthew needs to be shrunk so often, and it becomes as laughably repetitious as Joe 90 in his psychedelic mind transference machine.

Needcoffee.com DVD Review: The Secret Service: Complete Series (1969)
From his "Supermarionation" classic Thunderbirds to live-action fare like Space: 1999, he brought a memorable handful of shows to the canon of "classic sci-fi television." He also, however, threw out a few pitches that just flat failed to make it across home plate.
Built around the concept of a priest who is secretly an agent for the British crown, the series is essentially a baker's dozen worth of repetitions of the same basic formula, with very little to differentiate each episode from the next and no spiffy model rocketships flying around to break things up.
Of course, as a lesser-known show with a limited run, there may not be a wealth of material out there.
