EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin for PC Review - PC EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin Review
The Shadows of Luclin is easily the biggest, most significant EverQuest expansion yet, and considering the massive size of the other expansions, that's no small feat.
Not only does The Shadows of Luclin give EverQuest a graphical overhaul, but it offers even more new content than either of the previous EverQuest expansions--including dozens of new adventure zones, a new playable race, a new character class, new skills for high-level players, and more.
In that vein, The Shadows of Luclin introduces yet another character race, a powerful feline species called the vah shir, which can be bards, rogues, shamans, warriors, or beast lords--the latter of which is a brand-new character class.

The Shadows of Luclin also incorporated a new game engine, new character models, and gave players the ability to design graphical user interfaces.
The Shadows of Luclin also had problems on release that prevented many players from experiencing the new content immediately, due to the changing graphical engine.
In addition, Shadows of Luclin began the trend of instant teleportation in Everquest with the addition of the Nexus, which allowed people to transport from various spires in the original Norrath up to Luclin.

After the triumph that was the "Scars of Velious," it was probably inevitable that "Shadows of Luclin" (SoL) was to be something of a disappointment.
That feeling of things being unfinished permeates the whole expansion: There is a colony of gnomes in a cavern, including the teasingly named King of Above and King of Below, neither of whom speak, and who are surrounded by equally mute courtiers, except for a single historian whose dialogue has been broken for two years.
The allegedly improved graphics engine that shipped with Luclin is nice, if you have a far more robust machine than their system specifications indicate.

Higher Polygon Count = Higher Blood Pressure
During final testing of EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin, set for release December 4th, we have found it necessary to increase the minimum specifications for your hardware platform.
Rather than simply more zones, more items, and more encounters, Shadows of Luclin goes several leaps further and includes an almost entirely new graphics engine, and with that engine, new player character models which change the "look and feel" of the world dramatically.
Although technically below minimum specifications, EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin WILL run with 128M of ram, and you will be able to see all the new zones, the new race (Vah Shir) and the new class (Beastlord) without much decrease in performance.

GameSpy.com - Preview: EverQuest: Shadows of Luclin
The really big news is that Luclin is being developed using a brand new engine (some may say that the original EQ engine is looking a tad frail these days) and is being dubbed by some as EverQuest 1.5.
With the new engine comes the promise of all-new, higher poly count character models, smaller, more detailed zones (compared to the larger Kunark zones) with increased architectural design (over 25 including a newbie zone), as well as a brand new playable race and a new class.
Jeff and Gordon (no, not the NASCAR bloke) were most excited to convey news that the Luclin team will be implementing a new-to-EQ, hardcore rendering technique dubbed UMBRA when creating the new zones.

EverQuest: The Shadows of Luclin: Knowing logical upgrades would only get them by for so long, Sony revamped things considerably with The Shadows of Luclin with a new hardware-hungry graphical overhaul, 27 new zones, horses, the captivating astral-themed city of Luclin, and a new playable race called the Vah Shir.
EverQuest: The Planes of Power: Planes of Power introduced the Plane of Knowledge; 20 planes that any character could easily travel to and take on new challenges, use as a jumping pad to reach far strung areas in the game quickly, or simply interact with other player races you’d otherwise rarely, if ever, run into.
The graphics engine introduced with Shadows of Luclin holds up well today for the most part and the handful of graphical enhancements (revamped enemy models, environmental additions and refinements, etc) that come with Platinum set it apart somewhat from all other versions of EQ.
