Enoch Pratt (1808 - 1896) was an American businessman in Baltimore, a Unitarian, and a philanthropist.
In 1851 Pratt and his partner invested in Western Maryland coal mines and iron yards in the Baltimore neighborhood of Canton.
Pratt, upon his death in 1896, stipulated that his bequest be used to complete construction of the Sheppard Asylum, enlarge the facility to house 200 additional patients, serve the indigent, and that the name of the institution be changed to The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital.

Sheppard Pratt has made their archives available to us and we have access to hospital Board of Director’s minutes and invoices for its contruction, long ago photographs including home movies and Calvert Vaux’s original plans.
First, the hospital is undergoing a transition from a long-term care facility to a short-term and out-patient facility, in response to climactic changes in care brought about by drug treatment and shifting insurance policies for mental health care delivery.
In recent years, the hospital has sold or leased parcels of its land to Towson University (athletic facilities and a stadium have been built on former hospital grounds) and to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (Gilchrest Center is the most recent building on former hospital grounds).

Slate Savers is on its third leg of a $1.8 million project that involves repairing brick, replacing downspouts and grouting a 70,000-square-foot slate roof at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in Towson, Md.
Last year, Slate Savers covered the more than 100-year-old roof of Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital's B Building with an acrylic polymer grout aimed at restoring the slate cover.
On Wednesday night, the hospital evacuated 51 psychiatric patients and 10 staff members from its B Building as a lightning-induced fire ripped through its cupola.

Preserved hospitals canstill be in use as psychiatric hospitals, used for another purpose, or abandoned.
Intrusion at psychiatric institutions, residences, and hospitals which are still in operation is strongly discouraged (along with any sort of trepassing at any place where entry or exploration is prohibited or illegal).The privacy and treatment of the residents and patients must be respected.
