		Though "Shine" answers that question in somewhat facile ways, it has been so envelopingly directed by Scott Hicks, an Australian film maker with many television documentaries to his credit, that its emotional impact is powerful and real.
		The film also takes comfort from the familiar, even fashionable truisms that it finds here: that genius brings suffering, that a child is a parent's passive victim, that adult life is chiefly the aftermath of early trauma.
		Early in the film, the father is seen walking stiffly ahead of his son as they return from a piano competition; from this body language alone, David's sister can tell that her brother didn't win.

	'Shine' like it does, film full of spirit
		The relationship between David and his father is key to "Shine," and Armin Mueller-Stahl's performance is an impassioned portrait of an angry man who is denied the opportunity to fulfill his own musical prowess and takes out his frustration on his own son in the belief that it is in his best interest.
		Noah Taylor ("Flirting") is also excellent as the teenage David, and he and Rush have managed to develop an impressive number of similar mannerisms in their attempt to create a seamless dual portrayal of the same character at different stages in his life.
		It is a tribute to Helfgott and others like him, and it is a film that manages to elicit a genuine emotional response from its audience without playing down to it or enlisting the aid of any obvious dramatic ploys.

		"Shine" was one of the must-see films of 1996 and caused a bidding war at the Sundance Festival between Miramax Films and New Line Features (New Line eventually got the distribution rights), and upon viewing, it is apparent why this film caused such a stir.
		The film's resolution seems incomplete, since it is not apparent that David has actually come to a sense of closure concerning his father.

		This is our loss and Australia's gain, because Shine comes off as one of the upper-echelon films of the year, an ambitious and unflinching look at that country's David Helfgott, a prodigy of a pianist driven insane by his father, only to emerge again after 20 years of institutionalization.
		Extremely compelling for a film that is essentially a character study of one man, Shine succeeds by leaving out no detail and by masterfully using the camera to capture an inner turmoil that would be impossible for us to feel otherwise.
		Shine isn't flawless, though -- the biggest problem is a serious defect in the sound quality, normally no big deal, but inexcusable in a film about music.

		The things which lift Shine above this are a trio of outstanding performances by Rush, Mueller-Stahl and Taylor, the way in which it explores the reasons behind David's breakdown, the seesaw relationship between David and his father, and the wonderful, heavenly music by some of the world's greatest composers.
		However, as the film wears on David's behaviour, although consistently erratic, becomes familiar and, to a point, appealing as one gets used to listening to his rantings, some of which contain real comedy gems.
		It is as though the artist is taken over by the music, that he becomes one with the instrument and that the instrument is an extension of his body which he can use to express the emotions and feelings that his mouth cannot.

		Shine is one of those movies that the average Joe just kind of kicks the dirt when he's dragged along to it.
		Despite the popular assumption that this film won the Best Actor Ward because it portrayed a mentally ill man, like Slingblade, Rain Man, Elephant Man, etc etc. Rush was decried as an actor who would never be heard from again.
		Shine was his moment to really get his strengths on display, and there's lots to show.

		Helfgott was "force-fed" by a particularly insensitive father, who pushed the boy to learn the "Rach Third" (as it is referred to throughout the film) at a point when he should properly have been working on his scales and some of the easier Chopin miniatures and Mozart piano sonatas.
